Collorado College Wins Stabler-Locker Cup

from press release

WHITTIER, Calif.
– Colorado College won the inaugural Locker-Stabler Cup and completed a perfect regular season with a nerve-racking 6-5 victory at Whittier College on Saturday afternoon.

Senior midfielder Jamie Mauk struck for the game-winning goal with 5:55 remaining, but the contest wasn't decided until freshman goaltender Zach Steedman stopped Mike Neumayr in the closing seconds for one of his 11 saves.

On a day when the offense was held to its lowest scoring output of the season, CC' top-ranked defense came through again. The Tigers successfully killed six of seven man-down situations, including three in the fourth period when they were down two men for 30 seconds.

Colorado College held 11 of 15 opponents to five goals or less this season and did not allow more than nine scores in any single game.

Mauk, who led the Tigers with three goals and an assist, opened the scoring with 7:02 remaining in the first half and Bart Cerf doubled CC's advantage 1:13 later.

Daniel McQuade's man-up goal cut the Colorado College lead in half with 2:16 remaining in the first period and he tied the game 3:28 into the second frame off a feed from Colin Palma.

Jake Smith and Travis Voges gave the Tigers a 4-2 lead when they found the net 2:22 apart late in the second period, but McQuade and Taylor Dean squared the score with 2:07 remaining in the third.

It looked as though CC would take a 5-4 lead into the final 15 minutes when Mauk scored with 1:03 to play in the third period, but Neumayr's first goal of the season knotted the game 53 seconds later as the Poets rallied to tie the contest for the third time, overcoming two-goal deficits on two occasions.

Playing for the first time since 2008, Whittier finished the game with a 36-27 advantage in total shots. Each team put 16 on net.

Steedman recorded double-digit saves for the sixth time this season with 11.

Jon Cairone stopped 10 shots for the Poets, who finished the season with a 4-7 record..

The Locker-Stabler Cup was created to honor the school's former coaches – Colorado College's Doc Stabler and Whittier's Doug Locker – who helped bring lacrosse to the West Region of the United States.

The Tigers will learn their NCAA Tournament destination on Sunday night.
