Archbell Leaves W&L; Heading to Penn

from press release

LEXINGTON, Va.
– Jason Archbell has resigned his position as assistant lacrosse coach and assistant professor of physical education at Washington and Lee University and has accepted an offer to become an assistant lacrosse coach at the University of Pennsylvania.

"I want to thank Athletic Director Jan Hathorn and Head Coach Gene McCabe for such a tremendous opportunity to coach at Washington and Lee University," said Archbell. "I coached so many great young men, and feel very fortunate to have known them. I wish the team the best of luck in the future."

Archbell added "I am very much looking forward to coaching at the University of Pennsylvania and in the Ivy League. Penn is a program with a great tradition and I am grateful to Coach Mike Murphy for giving me the chance to coach and mentor the fine student-athletes that are here."

Archbell arrived at W&L in August of 2008 and served two seasons as the Generals' defensive coordinator. During that time, he helped guide W&L to a 27-10 overall record and the 2009 Old Dominion Athletic Conference title and subsequent NCAA Tournament berth. He helped mentor W&L lacrosse players to 15 all-conference citations over his two seasons, while his defenses ranked in the Top 25 of Division III in scoring defense both seasons, including a No. 13 ranking in 2010 (6.71 GAA). The 2009 squad tied a school record for wins in a season en route to posting a 16-4 overall record and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs.

"Jason is an excellent person and coach," noted W&L Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Gene McCabe. "I am grateful for all he gave to our Generals lacrosse program over the last two seasons. While I am sad he is leaving our program, I am also very happy for him. I know that he will do great things at UPENN and on behalf of everyone in our lacrosse program wish him the very best."

Archbell came to Washington and Lee following one season as an assistant coach and assistant sports information director at Denison University. In that role, he served as the team's defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator and helped lead the Big Red to a 14-3 overall record and a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

Prior to his stint at Denison, Archbell served as an assistant coach, defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Kenyon College from 2005-07 and assistant coach and defensive coordinator at Virginia Wesleyan from 2002-05.

Archbell is a 2002 graduate of Hampden-Sydney with a bachelor of arts in economics. He was a four-year starter for the Tigers' lacrosse team, serving as a team captain for his senior season. A First Team All-ODAC and Honorable Mention All-America selection in 2002, Archbell helped lead the Tigers to three NCAA Division III playoff appearances and the 2001 ODAC title.
