The First Time: Cabrini Dumps Gettysburg

Cabrini goalie Erick Zarzecki had to make just eight saves to log the 8-1 victory over No. 16 Gettysburg. The 18th-ranked Cavaliers defeated the Bullets for the first time in school history.

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini College men's lacrosse team did something today that it has never done. The Cavaliers defeated the visiting Gettysburg College Bullets for the first time in school history. The Blue and White dominated the game en route to an 8-1 final score.
The #18 Cavaliers got five points from junior Bobby Thorp, including three goals, and two goals from freshman Mike Leyden. The Blue and White improved to 3-2 with the win.
Leyden got the Cavaliers off on the right foot when sophomore Corey Elmer found the rookie just over three minutes into the game. Thorp got into the scorebook at the 5:06 mark when senior Brian Hill's pass found him streaking toward the goal.
Cabrini closed the period with a 3-0 lead after Thorp found sophomore Matt Biegel with just eight seconds to play in the period.
The Bullets got on the scoreboard five minutes into the second period. Cabrini regained its three goal advantage five minutes later when freshman Damian Sobieski scored his seventh goal of the season.
The Cavaliers took a 5-1 lead into the halftime break after Leyden found the back of the net with two seconds on the clock.
The third quarter remained scoreless until the 3:34 mark when Thorp posted his second goal of the day.
The Blue and White put the game away in the fourth quarter. Hill scored his 12th goal of the season at the 9:00 minute mark. Forty-five seconds later, Biegel found Thorp in a man-up situation, giving the Cavaliers the 8-1 advantage.
Cabrini outshot Gettysburg 37-18, including 20-9 in shots on goal. The Cavaliers also secured 26 ground balls to Gettysburg's 18, led by junior Andrew Kvech's five ground balls and freshman Anthony DiNenno's four.
Senior John McSorley and junior Tyler Grau caused three turnovers each. Cabrini's junior goaltender Erick Zarzecki recorded eight saves in the win.
Junior Ryan Fumai scored the lone goal for the Bullets (2-3).
The Cavaliers will host FDU-The College at Florham on Saturday at Edith Robb Dixon Field. The action is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
