Big Second Half Sends Cortland Past Stevenson

CORTLAND, N.Y.
– The nationally third-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team outscored ninth-ranked Stevenson, 7-2, in the second half to break a halftime tie and earned a 13-9 victory Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 4-0 on the season with their third straight win versus a ranked team. The Mustangs dropped to 5-2 with the setback.

Sophomore Cody Consul (Webster/Webster Schroeder) led the Cortland offense with a career-best six points on three goals and three assists. Senior Greg Wright (Irondequoit/West Irondequoit) recorded three goals and one assist, senior Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) contributed two goals and one assist, senior Zack Mulvaney (Deferiet/Carthage) scored twice and freshman Nick Wolak (Rochester/Brighton) chipped in with a goal and an assist. Senior Matt Hoey (Auburn) and freshman Billy Davis (Manhasset) added one goal apiece.

Junior goalie Mike Kaminski (Sayville) made 14 saves and recorded six ground balls for the Red Dragons. Junior Nick Jarvis (Syracuse/Onondaga Central) won 14-of-24 faceoffs, and senior Jack Kennedy (Camillus/West Genesee) and junior Sean Davern (Rochester/Irondequoit) each registered four ground balls.

Freshmen Stephen Banick (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) and Pat Candon (Long Beach/Holy Trinity) led the Mustangs with two goals each, while freshman Michael Crowe (Arlington, VA/Yorktown) added one goal and one assist. Seniors Brian Badolato (Boontown Township, NJ/Mountain Lakes) and Kenny Whittaker (Dundalk, MD/Archbishop Curley), sophomore J.P. Coombe (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) and freshman Billy Burgoyne (Boonton Township, NJ/Mountain Lakes) netted one goal apiece.

Senior goalie Ian Bolland (Mountain Lakes, NJ) turned aside 12 shots for Stevenson, junior Sam Ramatowski (Bowie, MD/Annapolis Area Christian) won 10-of-20 faceoffs, junior Parker Bratton (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh School) recorded three ground balls and a game-high five caused turnovers and junior Kyle Fendlay (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) scooped up a team-high four ground balls.

Cortland opened up a 3-1 lead eight minutes, 13 seconds into the game. Tota started the scoring at 12:50 off a Consul assist. Candon tied the game at 1-1 at 10:54 before Tota assisted Consul's first score at 7:42 and tallied his second at 6:47. Badolato and Crowe then sandwiched goals around Hoey's score, with Crowe's goal coming with just 1.3 seconds remaining in the quarter, and Cortland led 4-3 after one quarter. Banick and Whittaker gave Stevenson its only lead with goals at 14:49 and 13:11, respectively, to open the second quarter. Cortland answered with three consecutive goals for a 7-5 lead. Davis tallied his first career goal at 6:28, Mulvaney scored at 2:48 and Consul found the back of the net at 1:49. The Mustangs took the momentum into intermission as Burgoyne scored with 52 seconds remaining in the quarter and Banick netted a rebound goal nine seconds later to tie the game at 7-7.

The Red Dragons built a quick 11-7 lead with a four-goal outburst in the first four and a half minutes of the third quarter. Wright scored at 13:53, Consul notched his third of the game eight seconds later, Wolak ripped a 20-yard shot into the upper corner at 11:28 and Wright finished off the run off a Consul assist at 10:32. Candon's second goal of the game at 9:14 made it 11-8, but Wright responded with a goal at 2:37, just six seconds after a Cortland extra-man attempt expired, to make it 12-8 after three quarters. Coombe pulled Stevenson to within 12-9 with an unassisted goal at 12:01, and Mulvaney completed the scoring with a rebound goal at 9:01. As Stevenson tried to rally, Kaminski made four saves down the stretch and Cortland was able to possess the ball and run clock to earn the win.
