EXETER, N.H. - The Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team edged Springfield 9-8 on Tuesday evening in a battle of nationally-ranked squads. The 14th-ranked Polar Bears improve to 5-1 with the win while the 18th-ranked Pride drop to 4-2.

Mark Flibotte scored three times in the win for Bowdoin while Nathan Fritts added a pair of goals. Brendan Hughes, Billy Bergner, Griffin Cardew and Tyler Williams also scored for the Polar Bears.

Christopher Williamson made 12 saves in net for Bowdoin, who got another impressive performance from Hughes on the face-off dot with 13 wins in 18 draws.

The win gives Bowdoin its best start since the 2009 campaign, when the squad began the year 7-1. The Polar Bears will face their toughest task of the young season this weekend as they open their home slate with matches in consecutive days against Middlebury and Williams this Saturday and Sunday.

The contests are scheduled to be played on the Pickard grass field at 1 p.m. each day.

More details and complete statistics from Tuesday's game will be posted on the Bowdoin website on Wednesday.
