Oneonta State Stuns No. 15 RPI

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta State men used a stingy defense while making the most of its opportunities in upending No. 15 Rensselaer today at home 10-8. The win for the Red Dragons snapped its three-game losing streak while also handing the Engineers their first loss of the season.
Oneonta (2-5) topped Rensselaer (7-1) in every statistical category today including shots, 39-25 and face-offs, 17-5. Junior Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) was masterful in the circle today winning 17 of 21 face-offs and collecting a team high 12 ground balls. He also added a pair of goals and one assist on the offensive end.
"This is a huge win for our program," said coach Dan Mahar. "We did a great job of not giving up any second opportunities and when the ball was on the ground, we got the ground balls. I'm hoping that this game is a stepping stone to becoming the program we want to be."
Junior John DeOrdio (Chenango Forks/Chenango Forks) put Oneonta on the scoreboard first with a man-up goal assisted by classmate Tyler Jennings (Brewerton/Central Square). Two minutes later van de Veerdonk scored an unassisted goal to give the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead.
The Engineers came back with two unanswered goals to tie the score at the end of the first period. Scott Stolzenberg and Andrew Liptak each scored unassisted goals for Rensselaer. Liptak would finish the game with a pair of goals.
Oneonta would seize control in the second period with four goals to Rensselaer's one to take a 6-3 lead into halftime. Four different Red Dragons scored including freshman Matthew Knapp (Selden/Newfield), who scored his first collegiate goal to give the Red Dragons a 4-2 lead.
Rensselaer cut into Oneonta's lead in the third period to get to within 8-6 entering the fourth period. Aaron Shavel's eighth goal of the season at 2:09 made the score 8-6.
The two teams were even in the final period of play. The Red Dragons were up 9-6 after another man-up goal by DeOrdio at 11:07.
The Engineers battled back to close the gap to one goal with a pair of scores from Liptak and Eric Valero. Valero's goal came with 6:09 to play and made the score 9-8.
Both teams had their opportunities in the closing minutes, but it was van de Veerdonk who gave Oneonta an insurance goal with 1:15 remaining.
Senior Chris Miles (Manlius/Fayetteville Manlius) made nine saves in goal for Oneonta today to pick up the win. James Manchester made 13 saves for Rensselaer in the loss.
Oneonta will be off until next Wednesday when they will be home for a game versus Hamilton College beginning at 5pm.
