No. 7 Middlebury Breezes by No. 11 Bowdoin

MIDDLEBURY, Vt.
– Middlebury remained undefeated on the season as the #7 Panthers (7-0) moved to 5-0 in NESCAC play with a 16-10 win over 11th-ranked Bowdoin (4-3, 3-2). Middlebury held a 22-13 advantage in ground balls, leading the entire game with the exception of a 1-0 deficit.

The Panthers return to action on Wednesday when the host Hamilton, while the Polar Bears visit Williams on Sunday. Trailing 1-0, Middlebury went on a 5-0 run to take the lead at the 17:40 mark of the first half. Liza Herzog scored twice during the run, taking advantage of a turnover by the goalkeeper at the 20:52 mark for her second of the game.

Bowdoin answered with a great goal, as Katie Stewart caused a turnover, scooped up the ground ball and carried it the length of the field before finding the back of the net. Bowdoin followed with two more goals in a 22-second span to make it a 5-4 game with 13:08 left in the first half.

A free position goal from Michaela Colbert, followed by a pair from Elizabeth Garry gave the Panthers an 8-4 lead. Her first goal came on a nice feed from Ellen Halle, while the second was scored as she came from behind the net into the crease area.

Stewart and Middlebury's Margaret Souther exchanged late goals to leave the Panthers with a 10-6 advantage at the halftime break.

Bowdoin game out strong in the second half, making it a 10-8 game when Stewart converted a pass from Carolyn Gorajek at 26:27 to make it a 10-8 game. Herzog answered with a pair for Middlebury before Catherine Fowler scored in transition to increase the margin to 13-8 with 22:40 remaining.

McKenna Teague scored with a free position shot to the bottom right corner to cut the lead to 13-9 before the Panthers took 5:15 off the clock. The lengthy possession ended with Halle finding Colbert to give Middlebury a solid 14-9 lead with 15:45 left to play.

Clegg scored for Bowdoin at the 8:52 mark, followed by a pair from Souther to end the scoring with just two seconds remaining.

Souther finished with four goals, two assists, three ground balls and two draw controls. Herzog scored four times, Colbert scored three with one helper, while Lucy Jackson earned four ground balls with two caused turnovers. Lily Nguyen made eight saves in goal to earn the win.

Stewart paced Bowdoin with four tallies and two caused turnovers, followed by Clegg with three and Betsy Sachs with four draw controls. Tara Connolly made nine saves in goal.
