from press release
TROY, N.Y. – Senior Brett Overend scored
five goals and sophomore Alex Castronovo made 10 saves to lead the
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team to a
10-7 victory over #4 Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in a
Liberty League contest at East Campus Stadium. The Engineers
improve to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the league, while the Tigers are
now 7-2 and 1-1.
Three of Overend's (Laguna Hills, CA/Laguna Hills) goals came on man-up situations as Rensselaer converted on 4 of 9 opportunities. RIT, which entered the game ranked third in the nation on man-up (.538), was 0 for 2.
Castronovo (Garden City, NY/Garden City) made one save in the first quarter, three in the second, four in the third – in which RPI outscored the Tigers, 2-0 – and three in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Anthony DeLeo (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) stopped seven shots for the visitors.
The game was back-and-forth throughout the first half as the two teams alternated goals over the first six that were scored. RIT had three different goal scorers, while Overend scored twice and senior Paul DiLandro (East Quogue, NY/Westhampton Beach) once, with all three coming man-up.
Junior Wes Rudy (Doylestown, PA/The Hill School) gave Rensselaer its first lead, 4-3, at 8:15 of the second quarter, but RIT's PJ Hart (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) won the ensuing faceoff and evened the score just eight seconds later. Sophomore Taylor Wisman (Seattle, WA/Inglemoor) put the Tigers in front with his second goal of the first half but junior Grant Foulsham (Madison, NJ/Madison) tied the game a minute later. Overend then notched his fourth with 1:41 left in the quarter and Rensselaer led, 6-5, at the break.
The Engineers scored the first four goals of the second half with Overend and Rudy tallying in the third and Overend and DiLandro scoring to start the fourth. RPI held a 10-5 lead with less than seven minutes remaining before Jordan Collins-Hartwig (Buffalo, NY/Clarence) scored at 6:44 and A.J. Tingle (Cary, NC/Green Hope) scored at 2:04 to make the final margin three goals.
Joining Overend, DiLandro and Rudy with multiple points for the Engineers was freshman Connor Sullivan (Bedford, NH/Bedford), who had two assists. For RIT, Wisman had two goals and Allister Warren (Toronto, ON/Malvern Collegiate Institute) had a goal and an assist.
RPI finished with an edge in the final shots (32-28) and ground balls (32-31), while RIT had a 15-6 advantage in faceoffs.
The Engineers return to action next Saturday night at league foe Union (7pm). The Tigers host Ithaca on Wednesday at 4pm.
