Trinity Hands No. 11 Bowdoin Second Loss of Week

from press release

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Trinity College men's lacrosse team held Bowdoin scoreless in the second half and scored three times in the final 3:34 to take a 7-4 win at Pickard Field on Saturday afternoon.

The 19th-ranked Bantams remain unbeaten in NESCAC play (5-0) and improve to 7-2 overall. The 11th-ranked Polar Bears drop their second-straight contest and fall to 7-3 (4-3 NESCAC).

Rob Nogueras scored three times for Trinity, who held Bowdoin scoreless for the final 35:26. Jack Castelli had a goal and an assist for the Bantams while Peter Johnson stopped 10 shots. The loss spoiled an outstanding game for Polar Bear netminder Christopher Williamson, who made 22 saves in the loss for Bowdoin. Billy Bergner led the Polar Bear offense with a goal and an assist.

Bowdoin held the lead at intermission after Mark Flibotte's 20th goal of the season gave the hosts a 4-3 edge with 5:26 to go in the second quarter. But the Polar Bears would not find the back of the net again as the Bantams evened the score midway through the third quarter on a Castelli marker at 7:10.

The game settled into a defensive struggle with the Bantams controlling the majority of the possession into the fourth quarter. Trinity took 15 shots in the final period, but the Bowdoin defense- backed by six saves from Williamson - was able to keep the visitors at bay until the 3:23 mark. Steve Manning took control of a loose ball on the weak side of the net and quickly snapped a shot into the cage to give Trinity its first lead of the afternoon, 5-4. Nogueras added an insurance goal just 52 seconds later and sealed the win with an empty-netter at 1:17.

Trinity held a 44-28 edge in shots and won 9 of 15 faceoffs. Bowdoin committed 24 turnovers to 22 for the Bantams. Both teams posted scoreless 0-3 performances with the extra man.

Bowdoin will return to action with a night game on Wednesday against Clark (7:00 p.m.). Trinity will play at Colby on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
