Wood, No. 7 Jumbos Rock No. 13 Amherst

MEDFORD, Mass. - Sophomore Beau Wood (Sherwood Forest, MD) led nine Jumbos who scored goals with four as the seventh-ranked Tufts men's lacrosse team rolled to a 15-5 win against No. 13 Amherst in a NESCAC game at Bello Field on Saturday afternoon.
Defensively, Tufts held the Lord Jeffs to one goal in the first half and two over the first three quarters. The Jumbos led 12-2 entering the fourth, when Amherst added three goals. Senior Nick Rhoads (McLean, VA) was 16 for 22 on face-offs for Tufts, including 15 for 17 in the first three quarters.
The first quarter was tightly contested, as Tufts came out with a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior Ben Saperstein (Hewlett, NY).
However, the Jumbos would score the first four goals of the second quarter and never look back. Junior Andrew Fiamengo (New Fairfield, CT) assisted on two of the goals, as Tufts took a 5-0 lead. Senior Cole Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) scored Amherst's first goal at 4:12 of the second and the score was 5-1 Tufts at halftime.
The Jumbos put the game away in the third, scoring six unanswered goals to lead 11-1 on a man-up tally by senior Sean Kirwan (Boonton Township, NJ) at 4:25. Wood had two of the goals during the run. An Alex Fox goal (Garden City, NY) for Amherst was followed by a man-down goal by Jumbo freshman Chris Schoenhut (Mill Neck, NY) to close the third with Tufts ahead 12-2.
Tufts had two of the first three in the fourth for a 14-3 advantage, before sophomore Aaron Mathias (Ridgefield, CT) and Fox scored consecutive goals for the Lord Jeffs. Jumbo senior Jordan Korinis (Ridgewood, NJ) had the game's final goal for Tufts.
Senior co-captain Kevin McCormick (Laytonsville, MD) and sophomore Peter Bowers (Contestoga, PA) both had two goals and two assists for Tufts. Nine Jumbos overall finished with multiple points. Defenders Dan Alles (Rockville Centre, NY) and Mark Findaro (Vienna, VA) both had four groundballs. Sophomore goalie Patton Watkins (Chattanooga, TN) made 14 saves in the winning effort.
Mathias and Cherney both had a goal and assist for Amherst to back-up Fox's two scores. Senior Dan Routh (Allendale, NJ) caused two turnovers, while Fox led with three groundballs. Both starting goalie Sam Jakimo (Woodbury, NY) and replacement Gregory Majno (Sudbury, MA) made nine saves for the Lord Jeffs.
The hosts had advantages in all of the statistics, including 54-39 in shots and 40-28 in groundballs.
Tufts has won five in a row to improve to 10-2 overall and 6-1 in NESCAC. They play at Bates on Tuesday night at 7 pm. Amherst (8-4, 4-3 NESCAC), which has lost four of its last five, is at Connecticut College on Tuesday at 4:30 pm.
