Tota Breaks Goals Record in Cortland Romp

CORTLAND, N.Y.
– Senior Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) scored three goals to become Cortland's all-time leader in career goals with 165 as the nationally second-ranked Red Dragons defeated Oneonta, 20-3, in the SUNYAC Semifinals Wednesday afternoon at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. Cortland improved to 17-0 on the season and will host second-seeded Geneseo, a 7-5 winner versus Plattsburgh in the other semifinal, Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the championship game with the winner earning an automatic NCAA berth. The visiting Red Dragons ended their season at 5-10.

Tota, who also added four assists in the game, broke the record of 164 goals scored by Kyle Lambert from 2003-06. Tota also moved into fourth place in career scoring with 230 points.

Sophomore Cody Consul (Webster/Webster Schroeder) scored a career-best eight points on four goals and four assists to lead all Cortland scorers. Senior Greg Wright (Irondequoit/West Irondequoit) had three goals and one assist, freshman Matt Rakoczy (Clifton Park/Albany Academy) netted three goals and freshman Dieter Treusdell (Painted Post/Corning West) scored twice. Freshman Luke McNaney (Marcellus) contributed one goal and one assist, while senior Eric Richards (Skaneateles), junior Taylor Mendoza (Greensboro, NC/Western Guilford), sophomore Brian Winterfeldt (Merrick/Calhoun) and freshman Mike Cantelli (Holmdel, NJ) each scored a goal.

Junior goalie Mike Kaminski (Sayville) made three saves and did not allow a goal in 35 minutes, 30 seconds of action. Sophomore Scott Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) played 9:30, surrendering three goals, and sophomore Steve Mahle (Syracuse/West Genesee) made two saves and did not give up a goal in the fourth quarter. Junior Nick Jarvis (Syracuse/Onondaga Central) won 9-of-14 faceoffs, and freshman Joey Palo (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) was successful on 5-of-9. Mike Tota also collected five ground balls, senior Jack Kennedy (Camillus/West Genesee) registered four ground balls and four caused turnovers and junior Craig Sullivan (Duxbury, MA) contributed five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Sophomore Joey Finnegan (West Islip) paced Oneonta with a pair of goals, junior Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley) scored once and junior John DeOrdio (Chenango Forks) chipped in with an assist. Senior goalie Chris Miles (Manlius/Fayetteveille-Manlius) made nine saves in 56:43 before giving way to junior Ryan Guay (Middle Grove/Saratoga Springs), who did not face a shot on goal in the final 3:17. Van de Veerdonk won 10-of-18 faceoffs and collected six ground balls, while junior Scott Sorrillo (Montebello/Suffern) also had six ground balls and senior Devin Fouhy (West Islip) recorded four caused turnovers.

The host Red Dragons took control of the game early on, building an 8-0 lead after one quarter and eventually stretching the advantage to 18-0 in the third quarter. Consul netted three of Cortland's first five goals. Tota then scored two of the next four to tie the career-goal record as the host Red Dragons led 9-0 just 18 seconds into the second quarter. Cortland closed out the first half with four more goals from four different scorers and led 13-0 at the break.

Tota assisted on Wright's goal at 13:28 and Consul's fourth of the game at 11:46 to open up the scoring in the third quarter. Jarvis won the ensuing faceoff and fed Tota on the left side where he finished off a high shot to net his record-breaking 165th career goal just seven seconds later for a 16-0 lead. Treusdell and Mendoza pushed the lead to 18-0 before van de Veerdonk bounced in a shot from the right side to put Oneonta on the scoreboard at 4:29 of the third. Finnegan followed with back-to-back goals at 4:04 and 3:35 before Rakoczy and Treusdell finished off the scoring for the final of 20-3.
