Romano Leads MAC Commonwealth All-Stars

from press release

ANNEVILLE, Pa.
– The Middle Atlantic Conference has announced the 2012 All-Commonwealth men's lacrosse teams. Lycoming College's Stephen Romano earns Player of the Year honors. Albright College's Bryan Smith was awarded Rookie of the Year and his coach Jake Plunket earned Coach of the Year.

Romano becomes the first repeat conference player of the year in the MAC since Elizabethtown's Frank Puzzangara in 2006-07. He joins Messiah's Jono Linebaugh (2004-05) and Puzzangara as the only players in conference history to win the award twice. The dynamic attackman finished the regular season in the Commonwealth Conference in goals (2.57) and third in points (3.50). He posted seven-goal games against Messiah, scoring the game-winner in overtime, and SUNY Geneseo. During the season, he won three Commonwealth Conference Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week awards, giving him seven in his career.

Amazingly, despite consistently drawing double teams and the opponent's best defender, he still managed to post six hat tricks during the season. Smith ranked sixth in the conference in scoring, totaling 31 goals, 22 assists and 53 points on the season. He also picked up 54 ground balls. He had three games with four goals or more, including a five-goal, six-point effort in a win over Richard Stockton. Smith had three man-down tallies on the year.

In his first season as a head coach, Jake Plunket led a brand-new varsity program to a 16-3 mark and the #1 seed in the MAC tournament. His team, which comprised of 26 freshmen and three sophomores, was ranked nationally in scoring offense and upset defending champion Widener on the road in the regular season before falling to the Pride in a hard-fought Commonwealth championship game. His inaugural recruiting class featured the conference Rookie of the Year, three All-Conference selections, and eight Player of the Week nods.
