Russell, Aaron Lead Liberty All-League Honorees

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.
- The Liberty League has announced its 2012 All-Conference awards for men's lacrosse. The major award winners and all-league teams are listed below.

Offensive Player of the Year: Tyler Russell, RIT

Russell leads RIT and is third in the conference in scoring with 42 points on 37 goals and five assists, averaging 2.93 points per game. The senior attack leads the league averaging 2.64 goals per game, and in six conference games, he recorded 11 goals and three assists. Russell, a 2011 USILA honorable mention All-American, has scored at least one goal in 12-of-14 games this season, tallying a season high six goals versus Brockport back in March. He became the 14th player in program history to record 100 career goals in a game versus Ithaca in April. He has 112 career goals, which is tied for eighth all time at RIT.

Defensive Player of the Year: Sean Aaron, Union

Named to 2012 Tewaaraton Award Watch List, Aaron has had a stellar senior season in net for the Dutchmen. A three-time Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week, Aaron is 10-3 on the season and is second in the Liberty League with a 6.37 GAA and tops in the league with a .661 save percentage (both top-15 NCAA). Aaron has been at his best in conference play, with a record of 5-1 and a 6.17 GAA. His best performance came in a 6-3 win over RPI on April 14, when he stopped a season high 20 shots to help Union earn the victory.

Rookie of the Year: Brendan MacDonald, RIT

MacDonald is second on the team in scoring with 39 points on 27 goals and 12 assists. His three game winning goals are tied for the team lead. MacDonald was a four time Liberty League Rookie of the Week selection in 2012, and tied for fourth in conference play, averaging 1.83 goals per game. MacDonald is tied for fourth in conference play averaging 2.67 points per game, and is tied for fifth overall in scoring, averaging 2.86 points per game.

Coaching Staff of the Year: Mike Mahoney, St. Lawrence

Mahoney was named the Liberty League Coach of the Year in 2009 as well. His team rebounded from an 0-6 conference record last spring to a 12-2 overall mark and the No. 19 spot in the national rankings in 2012.
