Greenberg's Trick Lifts Union Over Montclair State

from press release

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.
– Sophomore attack Nate Greenberg had three goals and Ted McKenna, Jack Farrell and Jonathan Andrews each scored twice to lead No. 14 Union men's lacrosse (12-4, 5-1 Liberty League) to a 12-5 win over Montclair State (11-6, 6-0 Skyline Conference) in the opening round of the Division III NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament at Frank Bailey Field.

Montclair State's Tyler Meth had two goals and an assist to lead the Red Hawks, who had won 10 straight games coming into the contest.

Union, which led 2-1 after one quarter of play, ran off nine unanswered goals in the second and third quarters to put the game out of reach.

Junior midfielder Alex Stone started the run just seven seconds into the second quarter, scooping up a ground ball after a faceoff win and beating Montclair St. goalie Mark Glander (10 saves) to put Union up 3-1.

Greenberg scored his second and third goals of the contest at the 7:52 and 2:32 marks of the second quarter, giving the sophomore his second career three goal game and first since scoring three in a 12-7 over Hamilton on April 6, 2011 at Union.

Union led 5-1 at the break and continued the run as Andrews opened up the half with an unassisted goal at 2:57 mark of the third quarter. McKenna netted his 100th career goal on a diving shot with 10:07 to go in the quarter.

Junior midfielder Peter Greisinger added his second goal of the season on a shot from 10 yards out with 7:16 left in the third, and McKenna added his team-leading 28th goal of the season with 6:32 on the clock to put Union up 9-1.

Senior midfielder Ethan Meyer tallied his 17th goal of the season at 9:29, and senior midfielder Jack Farrell scored just four seconds later after a faceoff win to put Union ahead 11-1 after three quarters of play.

Montclair State's Kenneth Bogert ended the run with a goal 2:49 into the fourth quarter. The Red Hawks scored three of the next four goals in the contest, two from Meth, and another from Michael Schreck with 3:52 left in the fourth quarter to cut the Union lead to 12-5. But despite outshooting Union 16-1 in the final frame, Montclair St. would get no closer on the scoreboard.

Senior goalie Sean Aaron stopped seven of eight shots in net for Union in 42:01 to improve to 12-4 on the season. Freshman Stefan Basile made six saves in the final 17:59 for the Dutchmen.

Union held a 45-29 advantage on ground balls and won 16-of-21 faceoffs with Stone and Farrell leading the way, both finishing 8-of-10 on the night.

The Dutchmen improved to 2-1 all-time in NCAA Tournament play, and will host Bowdoin on Saturday at Frank Bailey Field, with a game time to be announced in the coming days.
