John Carroll to Add M&W in 2014
from press release
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio - John Carroll University President Rev. Robert L. Niehoff, S.J. announced today that men's and women's lacrosse will debut as varsity sports at the Division III school, with competition beginning during the 2013-2014 academic year.
"We are excited to add one of the fastest growing sports in the country to our varsity athletics program," said Father Niehoff. "With this level of student and alumni interest in lacrosse, we know it is the right time for us move forward with expanding our varsity sports in this way."
The men's and women's lacrosse teams will be built upon the existing talent of John Carroll's competitive club teams. This is the first addition of a varsity sport at John Carroll since the 1999-2000 academic year when women's golf began competition.
"With such a great demand for lacrosse, we are looking forward to building this team," said John Carroll University Director of Athletics and Recreation Laurie Massa. "We expect to hire the coaches this fall and to attract student-athletes that have the leadership skills and the pioneering spirit to start a new varsity program."
The arrival of the two lacrosse teams will bring the total number of athletic teams at John Carroll to 23 (12 men and 11 women). The school currently sponsors intercollegiate athletic teams in football, women's volleyball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving, wrestling, baseball, softball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's golf, and men's and women's track and field.
"Fr. Niehoff's commitment to varsity lacrosse will provide the opportunity for high school lacrosse players to choose the quality experience of a Jesuit education and NCAA Division III competition with championship goals," said Massa.
