Maritime Announces Four Captains for 2012

THROGS NECK, N.Y. – SUNY Maritime head coach Daniel Lawrence announced on Monday the captains for the 2012 season: seniors Steven Tonn (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), Dylan Walsh (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East), John Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and junior Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville). These men were chosen by the coaching staff to be captains because of the outstanding dedication they have shown the last few years and their exceptional work ethic both on and off the field.
Tonn is a three-year starting defensemen and returning captain. He is a two-time All-Skyline Conference selection, appeared in 45 games and started 44. He has collected 129 ground balls in his career to go with 68 caused turnovers. Tonn is currently majoring in Marine Transportation with a minor in Ship Management. He is looking to work as a freight broker after graduation.
Walsh is a three-year member of the team, playing as a defensive midfielder. As the number one short-stick last year, he regularly drew the toughest defensive matchup. For his career, he has appeared in 17 games, picking up 11 ground balls, causing three turnovers and adding two assists. Dylan is majoring in Marine Transportation with a USCG Third Mate License and is planning on shipping out after graduation.
Driscoll is a three-year member of the team. In his career, he has appeared 37 games and started 10. He has played multiple roles for the team – attack, midfield and face-off as well. For his career, he has 15 goals and eight assists. He has taken 179 face-offs and collected 70 groundballs. He is majoring in Marine Transportation with a USCG Third Mates License and is looking to ship out after graduation.
Messina is a two-year member of the team. For his career, his has played in 30 games and started 24. He has scored 28 goals, assisted on 11 and collected 30 groundballs. For his play last season, he was selected to the Second Team All-Skyline Conference. He is majoring in Marine Engineering with a Third Assistant Engineer's License and is planning on shipping out after graduation.
These four captains are looking to help the team improve on their second-straight Skyline Conference playoff appearance in 2011. The Privateers begin their season at home against Vassar on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 1:00 pm.
