Rolling: Washington & Lee Stuns No. 10 Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio – Sophomore midfielder Garrett Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) scored man-up from junior midfielder Joe Wood (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) with 2:04 remaining to lift the Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to an 8-7 win over 10th-ranked Denison on Sunday at Piper Stadium.
Sophomore goalkeeper Warren Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) was spectacular in goal, recording 13 saves in the contest, including two in the final 35 seconds to preserve the win. His final save came as time expired, allowing the Generals (4-0) to claim their first win over Denison (1-1) in the last four meetings.
W&L opened up a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on unassisted goals by senior attackman Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) and senior midfielders Cooper Brown (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) and Luke Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant). Denison got on the board with a tally by junior attackman Eddie Vita at the 3:44 mark of the first quarter and followed with consecutive goals by sophomore attackman Teddy Powell to knot the score at 3-3 just 16 seconds into the second quarter.
Each team scored once more in the second quarter as the teams headed to the locker room tied at 4-4. The Generals once again took the lead 2:25 into the second half when sophomore attackman Tyler Goldman (New York, N.Y./Loomis Chaffee) scored off a Means feed for a 5-4 lead. However, Denison answered back 1:00 later when senior midfielder Nick Verklin scored off an assist from senior midfielder Tyler King to tie the score at 5-5.
W&L claimed a 6-5 lead on an unassisted tally by Means at the 10:32 mark, but the Big Red scored the game's next two goals to take its first lead of the game at 7-6 with 11:48 left in the game.
Sophomore attackman Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy) knotted the game when he found rope unassisted at the 5:54 mark, setting up the late game drama.
Means led W&L with two goals and one assist, while Dabir scored two goals. Brown added one goal and one assist. Berenis played the entire contest in goal en route to his season-best save total.
Powell paced Denison with three goals. Vita, Verklin and King all had one goal and one assist. First-year Chris Thomas played all 60 minutes in goal, notching seven saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Washington College for a 1:00 pm contest.
