Balanced Scoring Leads Cortland Past Aurora

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally top-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team opened up a 9-1 lead at the half and went on to defeat Aurora University, 14-8, Saturday night in the second round of the NCAA Div. III Men's Lacrosse Tournament. The Red Dragons improved to 18-0 on the season and advanced to host Western New England, a 15-12 winner at Nazareth, in a quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday. The Spartans' season ended at 15-4.
Ten different players scored at least one goal for Cortland, led by junior Cody Consul (Webster/Webster Schroeder) and freshman James Stavrakis (Hillsborough, NJ) with three each. Consul also chipped in with an assist. Freshman Zach Hopps (Akwesasne/Massena) tallied one goal and three assists, junior Brian Winterfeldt (Merrick/Calhoun) and sophomore Matt Rakoczy (Clifton Park/Albany Academy) each had one goal and one assist and junior Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) recorded four assists. Seniors Taylor Mendoza (Greensboro, NC/Western Guilford) and Thomas Casey (Yorktown), juniors Stephen Burke (Yorktown) and Mike Cummings (Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa) and sophomore Mike Cantelli (Holmdel, NJ) notched one goal apiece.
Senior goalie Mike Kaminski (Sayville) made 10 saves and allowed six goals in 50 minutes and six seconds before giving way to junior Steve Mahle (Camillus/West Genesee), who stopped one shot and surrendered two goals in the final 9:54. Freshman Pat Baldwin won 12 of 19 faceoffs and collected six ground balls, and sophomore Billy Davis (Manhasset) won all five faceoffs he took and recorded four ground balls. Sophomore Patrick Brown (Camillus/West Genesee) registered a team-high five ground balls, while senior Brandon Mulholland (Levittown/MacArthur) scooped up four.
Sophomore Max Obriecht (Naperville, IL/Naperville North) led the Spartans with two goals and two assists. Junior Garret Rosiek (Blue Bell, PA/WissAhickon) registered two goals and one assist, juniors Pat Diorka (Naperville, IL/Waubonsie Valley) and Justin Bose (Ann Arbor, MI/Ann Arbor Pioneer) each scored twice and junior Zachary Olsen (Anthem, AZ/Boulder Creek) and sophomore Jordan Williams (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain) contributed one assist apiece.
Junior goalie Adam Holka (Howell, MI/Hartland) turned aside 16 shots. Obriecht collected a game-high six ground balls, and junior Spencer Fuqua (Cypress, CA/Los Alamitos) recorded five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
The Red Dragons opened up a 4-0 lead in the first quarter as four different players scored. Obriecht put the Spartans on the scoreboard with a man-up goal 11 seconds before the end of the period to make it 4-1. Cortland built what seemed like a commanding 9-1 lead at intermission as the Red Dragons out scored Aurora, 5-0, in the second quarter. Stavrakis scored two of his goals and Slavik picked up a pair of assists during the quarter.
Aurora opened the third quarter by scoring three of the first four goals to pull to within 10-4 with 9:25 remaining. Cortland answered with scores from Casey and Cantelli just over two minutes apart to push the Red Dragons' lead back to eight at 12-4. Rosiek tallied a goal with 3.5 seconds on the clock to end the quarter and Bose brought the Spartans to within 12-6 with a goal just 35 seconds into the final quarter. Cortland quelled any chance for an upset as Consul and Stavrakis each scored his third goal of the night to make it a 14-6 game with 9:44 remaining. Aurora closed the scoring with goals from Bose at 8:26 and Obriecht at 1:34 for the 14-8 final.
