Delaware Valley Names Mercadante First Head Coach
from Press Release
DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College is proud to announce that Gary Mercadante has accepted the first-ever men's lacrosse head coaching position in school history.
Mercadante, whose coaching position is full-time, joins Delaware Valley just two months after it announced the addition of five NCAA Division III sports (women's lacrosse, men's lacrosse, women's golf, men's tennis and women's tennis). He will spend the upcoming year organizing the program and recruiting for the first year of intercollegiate competition that will take place in the spring of 2015 (a men's lacrosse club has existed at the college for a number of years).
"I am thankful to (athletic director) Steve Cantrell, (college president) Dr. Brosnan and the committee for this opportunity. Mercadante said. "After meeting with them and seeing their passion and vision for both the college and athletics, I was sold. The most exciting aspect of all of this is the opportunity to build a program from scratch and create my own culture with the program from day one."
Mercadante has spent the last four years as a full-time assistant coach at nearby Ursinus College (Collegeville, PA). He was the defensive coordinator for the Bears and also coached the man down unit as well as running the substitution box. Mercadante also served as the team's academic, budget, recruiting and video editing/software coordinator.
Ursinus posted winning records in three of Mercadante's four years, including a 9-5 mark in 2013. That season also saw the Bears notch their first victory over a top 20 team when they defeated No. 18 York College. In 2011, Ursinus went 9-6 and reached the Centennial Conference playoffs for the first time in program history. One year earlier, Mercadante's man down defense ranked eighth percentage-wise in Division III.
Mercadante was a four-year letterwinner and two-year captain at Dickinson College (Carlisle, PA). His college career came after being a member of the four-time New Jersey state tournament champions at Delbarton School (Morristown, NJ).
Mercadante, who has worked numerous camps over the years including roles as the site coordinator for Champ Camp (Baltimore, MD) and King of the Hill (Westminster, MD), graduated from Dickinson in 2009 with a bachelor of arts degree in American Studies. He and his wife Erin live in Collegeville.
"We are thrilled that Gary has joined us at Delaware Valley College as the head coach of our new men's lacrosse program," Cantrell said. "He quickly moved to the top of a strong group of candidates because of his passion, local recruiting ties and commitment to the overall student-athlete. We are confident that he will build our men's lacrosse program into one that will best represent the college both on and off the field."
