from press release
SALEM, Va. – Two hat tricks powered St.
Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team, ranked 16th in the
country by Lacrosse Magazine, to a convincing 12-8 season-opening
win over No. 8 Roanoke College Tuesday afternoon.
Midfielders Gordy Long (Monkton, Md./St. Paul's School) and Matt Tarrant (Mt. Airy, Md./Urbana) each kicked off the new campaign with three goals apiece while sophomore attackman Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville) contributed two goals and two assists.
The Seahawks (1-0) only trailed once in the game as St. Mary's owned a 5-3 advantage at halftime behind Jordan's two goals and junior midfielder Will Lerch's (Lothian, Md./Calverton) two points (1 G, 1 A).
Roanoke (0-1) claimed the first goal of the contest at 9:34 before St. Mary's netted three of the first period's next four goals for a 3-2 lead after the first 15 minutes. Tarrant sent the Seahawks into intermission with a two-goal margin as he converted Lerch's feed with eight seconds left in the half.
St. Mary's doubled up on the Maroons in the third period with a pair of two-goal runs. Jordan assisted on two of the four goals while junior midfielder Nathaniel Babcock (Baltimore, Md./Severn) and first-year attackman Patrick Regan (Wilmington, N.C./Cape Fear) joined in the scoring action with one goal each.
The Seahawks and Roanoke were even in the fourth as each side found the back of the net three times. Regan struck again for St. Mary's to finish the game with two goals, including a man-up score.
The St. Mary's offense fired off 36 shots to the Maroons' 34 while also edging the hosts 31-29 in ground balls. The Seahawk defense was solid in their first game as senior Zack Blewett (Darnestown, Md./Heights) turned away nine shots and scooped up four ground balls while the defensemen frazzled Roanoke into 21 turnovers.
Sophomore Teddy Secor (California, Md./Calverton) had a solid performance at the X, winning 6-of-10 face-offs, while fellow classmate Phil Cappello (Woburn, Mass./Austin Prep) paced the defense with a game- and five ground balls and one caused turnover.
Sophomores Tyler McWilliams (Downingtown, Pa.) and Colin Mackenzie (Hamilton, Mass.) led the Maroons in the loss with two goals each while senior Charles Pease (Landisville, Pa.) picked up 16 saves and three loose balls.
St. Mary's battles another Top 10 opponent when it faces off against No. 5 Dickinson on Saturday in a netural site game at the St. Paul's (Md.) School.
