Plattsburgh Dumps Potsdam, Cortland On Deck

from press release

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team overcame a slow start to rally for an 11-6 win at Potsdam in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Semifinals, giving the Cardinals a spot in the SUNYAC Finals for the second-straight season.

The third-seeded Cardinals (13-5) were able to strike first when Brendan Damm scored just 1:14 into the game but the second-seeded Bears (10-6) retaliated with two goals in the first quarter and two more in the second to put Plattsburgh State down by a score of 4-1.

Senior Anthony Pafundi started the rally with his 14th of the year from James Read at the 9:20 mark of the second. Later in the quarter, Read set up Jack Felter to bring the Cardinals within one before Tim Lawrence tied it up at 4-4 with 2:49 left in the half.

Damm opened the second half just like the first, scoring his second of the game to give Plattsburgh State a 5-4 lead with 49 seconds gone in the third, but Potsdam's Matt Donovan responded four minutes later to bring the teams even at 5-5. The tie was a short-lived one though as Lawrence netted his second of the afternoon at the 9:35 mark to give the Cardinals the lead and they would never look back. Damm hit the back of the cage 10 seconds later to make it 7-5 before Felter added his second of the game at 7:22 to give Plattsburgh State an 8-5 lead. The Bears were able to get one back as Ed Doherty scored with 4:32 left in the third, trimming the Cardinals' lead to 8-6 heading into the final frame.

The Cardinals closed out the game with three unanswered goal from Tom Duggan, Damm and Lawrence, while the Plattsburgh State defense held Potsdam to just three shots in the fourth quarter.

Damm paced the offense with four goals to bring his season total to a league-leading 50 goals. Lawrence continues his hot streak of late with three goals while Felter, Duggan and Read each chipped in two points. Joey Kromer won 16-of-21 face-offs with five ground balls. Charlie Dullea and Matt Renko also picked up five ground balls while Peter Johann had a game-high four caused turnovers.

The Bears were led by Rob Kunz with two goals and an assist while Donovan scored twice. Ryan McConnell finished the day with six ground balls.

Andrew Hauk earned the win for Plattsburgh State, stopping four of the 10 shots he faced. Potsdam's Ryan Duffy made 19 saves in the loss.

Plattsburgh State now prepares for top-seeded Cortland, who defeated Oneonta in the other semifinal matchup by a score of 15-3, in a rematch of last year's SUNYAC Championship game. The Cardinals will travel to Cortland in search of their first conference title on Saturday. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
