Severns Leaves Centre, Joins Davis & Elkins
from press release
CENTRE, Ky. - After leading Centre's lacrosse program to two NCAA Tournament appearances in its first four years of competition, head coach Bert Severns has accepted a similar challenge again at the NCAA Division II level, where he will be the first men's lacrosse coach at Davis & Elkins College.
Severns has had many connections over the years with Davis & Elkins, which is located in Elkins, W. Va. and competes in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Senators will begin varsity lacrosse competition in the 2015 season.
At Davis & Elkins, Severns will hope to recreate the success he had in four seasons at Centre, where he compiled a 39-21 overall record and a 21-9 conference record. Severns' Centre teams reached the NCAA Tournament twice, shared a 2013 Southern Athletic Association regular season championship and won the 2014 SAA Tournament.
Severns guided Centre's program through a dramatic turnaround, following up a 3-10 record in the team's first season with a 12-4 record and Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Honors a year later. The Colonels enjoyed more success in their third year with a 11-4 record and the team's first NCAA Tournament appearance, then followed it up in 2014 with another NCAA appearance, a school record for victories with a 13-4 season, and a school record for consecutive victories with an 11-game winning streak.
Severns came to Centre in 2010 after working several years in the sporting goods industry. He previously was a head coach at Alfred University and an assistant coach at the United States Naval Academy and the United States Military Academy.
Centre will begin a national search for its next men's lacrosse coach.
