Young Named Head Coach at Oglethorpe

from press release

ATLANTA - The Oglethorpe athletic department is pleased to announce the hiring of Nathan Young as its new head men's lacrosse coach, effective immediately. He becomes the third head coach in the history of the program.

"We are excited to welcome Nathan Young as our next head men's lacrosse coach," said Oglethorpe Director of Athletics Becky Hall. "Coach Young has taken his passion for lacrosse and drive to excel and very quickly parlayed that into very successful coaching stints. His successes both as a player and a coach will continue to elevate our program to the next level."

Young has experience as a men's lacrosse coach both in the SAA and in Georgia. He spent last season as an assistant coach at conference rival Birmingham-Southern, acting as the offensive and recruiting coordinators. During the 2013 season, he worked as an assistant coach at Young Harris, a Division II program in Young Harris, Ga., about 100 miles north of Atlanta. There, he acted as the defensive and recruiting coordinators.

Before that, Young served as head coach at Shorter in Rome, Ga., from 2009-12. While there, he oversaw the founding of the men's lacrosse program and led it as it prepared to transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II play. He has also served as the head men's lacrosse coach at NAIA Tennessee Wesleyan and in the Florida high school ranks.

"I would like to thank President Schall, Dean Hall, Athletic Director Hall and the rest of the search committee for appointing me as the third men's lacrosse coach in program history," said Young. "I look forward to giving the men's lacrosse program a new beginning and taking the program to the next level, where it can be successful in the SAA. Oglethorpe has a great academic history along with amazing faculty and staff, and facilities that are on the rise, not to mention that we have the Atlanta skyline in our backyard. Why wouldn't anyone want to come to Oglethorpe University?"

Young takes over a men's lacrosse program that suffered a 1-12 overall record during the 2014 season.

"Nathan is the right person to take the helm and build the lacrosse program into a serious one here in the Southeast. We are pleased that he has joined us and is now a part of the Stormy Petrel family," said Hall.
