COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 16 Ohio State women's lacrosse team topped California, 18-5, Tuesday evening at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes, now 8-1, have equaled the best start in school history; the 2002 squad also opened the season 8-1. This was the sixth-consecutive win for Ohio State.
The Buckeyes took a 9-3 lead over the Bears into halftime; Kelly Haggerty had five goals and Rachel Hawes scored three goals in the first half.
Haggerty, a junior from West Chester, Pa., set the Ohio State single-game record with eight goals, her eighth multiple-goal game of the season. With two assists, she finished with nine points for the game.
"I'm excited that in the last two games, we put away the opponents and both teams were quality teams," said Ohio State coach Sue Stimmel. "To be playing this well in the middle of the season is great."
Hawes finished with four goals. Jayme Beard, Laura Burke, Rachael Cornicello, Kristen Donahue, Gabby Capuzzi and Olivia Annalora each scored a goal for Ohio State.
Columbus sophomore Annie Carruthers got the win in goal for the Buckeyes with seven saves; senior goalkeeper Kristen Gilwee was not in uniform due to a death in her family.
