Drexel Scores 10 in First to Beat Bucknell

from press release

PHILADELPHIA - Drexel scored 10 first-half goals en route to a 13-8 victory over visiting Bucknell in non-conference women's lacrosse action. The win snapped the Bison's three-game winning streak as they dropped to 7-3 on the season. Charlotte Wood scored five goals while Danielle Iacono came off the bench to record two goals and two assists as the Dragons moved to 7-1 on the season. Drexel has now won five games in a row with the team's only defeat coming at No. 5 Penn.

Drexel burst out of the gate as Katie Lawson took a Jaclyn Klunder pass less than three minutes into the game and scored. Wood registered her first goal less than three minutes later to give Drexel a 2-0 lead. Lawson appeared headed toward her second goal of the game less than a minute after Wood's score when she quickly shuttled the ball to a wide-open Becca Drylie-Perkins on the doorstep of the cage. The junior stuffed the ball into the net as the Dragons' advantage swelled to 3-0. Bucknell put up its first goal as Julia Braun scored unassisted. But the Dragons opened a huge run following the score as Wood notched her second goal of the game and ignited a six-goal streak that spanned 10 and a half minutes that was capped by a Iacono score that was set up by a centering pass from Emily Kane. The picture-perfect goal gave the Dragons a 9-1 lead with less than 12 minutes remaining in the first half. Bucknell ended the run with a free-position goal from Ryan Gribbon and got another score from Bonnie Buechel to creep closer. Katie Blazer got one of the goals back for the Dragons as she scored on Iacono's second assist of the game. With less than three minutes left in the half, Bucknell recorded the final goal of the period when Becca Devine finished on a Gribbon pass but Drexel headed to the break with a 10-4 advantage.

Bucknell scored the first two goals coming out of halftime to move to within four goals but Iacono and Wood each scored to put the game out of reach. Devine and Buechel followed with goals but too little time remained on the clock for Bucknell to threaten the Dragons. Wood capped the game with her fifth goal of the game as she converted a free-position shot.

Alyssa DeLorenz, a four-time Patriot League Goalie of the Week pick this season, was charged with all 13 goals allowed while making 13 saves. Lauren LaBella made six saves for the Dragons. Drexel outshot the Bison, 34-19, including a 21-9 edge in the decisive first half. Allegra Gerhardt came off the bench for Drexel and caused three turnovers and picked up a team-high three draw controls. Kimberly Kabernagel caused a pair of turnovers and added two groundballs while Josie Haller contributed three caused turnovers and two groundballs. Bucknell's Carol Donohue had a game-high seven draw controls.
