Cal Sets Scoring Mark in Win Over St. Mary's
from press release
BERKELEY, Calif. - California scored a
school-record 22 goals to rout MPSF foe Saint Mary's, 22-13, on
Wednesday at Memorial Stadium. Cal senior attacker Sam Price led
all scorers with seven points (4 goals, 3 assists). Five Golden
Bears - senior attacker Sam Price, junior midfielder Alex Tickner,
junior midfielder Alyse Kennedy, freshman midfielder Vail Horn and
senior attacker Elizabeth T Jahp - scored hat tricks, with Price
scoring four goals and tallying three assists to lead all scorers
with seven points. The Bears improved their record to 5-8 (3-1
MPSF) and snapped a five-game losing streak with the victory. Saint
Mary's fell to 1-8 (0-4 MPSF).
Cal's previous goal-scoring record was 21, set in a 21-10 win over UC Davis on April 5, 2008, in Davis, Calif.
"It was nice to get that win," Cal head coach Theresa Sherry said. "It's been a while. Also, it's good to see our attack working together from the beginning. We did very well on the draw controls and had a lot of energy. We just have to shore some things up on the defense now. I think we kind of lost a little steam in the second half. We just need to make sure both ends are working well. It felt very good to see our attack working like that."
Cal outshot Saint Mary's, 32-22, and claimed a 26-10 advantage in draw controls.
"Since last game, Alyse Kennedy has been doing well for us," Sherry added. "And Sam Price has done well on our attack. Alex Tickner has been a steady person for us in midfield and in scoring goals."
The Gaels scored two hat tricks of their own, from senior midfielder P.J. Hainley and freshman midfielder Jessica Forster.
The Bears started strong, scoring two goals in the first minute. Horn, assisted by Price, scored after 32 seconds and Kennedy put away an unassisted goal after 55 seconds to give Cal a 2-0 lead. The Bears extended their lead to 5-0 with goals by Tickner (8-meter goal at 3:43), sophomore midfielder Emily Abbood (set up by Price at 5:14) and freshman midfielder Allie Welsh (assisted by Tickner at 7:24).
Saint Mary's head coach Lauren Uhr called a timeout after Cal's fifth goal. That move seemed to pay dividends when freshman attacker Juliet Munroe scored an unassisted goal at 8:38, making the score 5-1.
Cal responded 11 seconds later, when Tickner set up Price for her first goal of the game at 8:49. Jahp, assisted by junior attacker Catie O'Mahoney, scored at 11:15, and Cal led, 7-1.
After junior attacker Abbie Coleman converted an eight-meter shot to make the score 7-2 at 11:55, Cal went on a 4-0 run. Kennedy scored twice (13:34 and 17:30), while Horn (14:09) and Abbood (8-meter goal, 18:37) each scored once. The Bears led 11-2.
Neither team produced a goal for the next 8:35, until Forster scored an eight-meter goal at 27:12 to cut Cal's lead to 11-3.
O'Mahoney struck at 27:58 for Cal, Hainley scored at 28:25 for the Gaels and Tickner scored the last goal of the first half at 29:54 to give Cal a 13-4 lead at halftime.
Cal had a 20-8 shot advantage at halftime, but the Gaels outshot Cal, 14-12, in the second half.
The Bears outscored Saint Mary's, 3-1, to open the second half, with Price (33:56), freshman attacker Tara Arolla (37:56) and Welsh (39:22) scoring for Cal. Gaels junior defender Maggie Schwab scored at 5:37 during that span, and Cal led, 16-5.
But Saint Mary's outscored Cal, 8-6, the rest of the game. That included a stretch of four straight Saint Mary's goals that pulled the Gaels within eight of Cal (16-8) at 46:09.
A Cal injury delayed the game for several minutes, with the Bears ahead, 21-13.
Tickner, who had scored with six seconds remaining in the first half, scored with two seconds remaining in the game to make the final score 22-13.
Cal leaves Friday for a nonconference match against No. 1 Northwestern on Sunday, April 5; the four-time defending NCAA champion Wildcats will host the Bears at 11 a.m. PT.
