Penn Routs Harvard for 10th Straight Win
from press release
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--The No. 3 Penn women's lacrosse team made it 10 straight wins with an Ivy League victory over Harvard, 18-9, Saturday. The Quakers scored nine in each half to come away with the win and remain undefeated on the season.
Penn got off to a bit of a slow start and even trailed twice before pulling away from a 4-4 tie with a 5-0 scoring run in the final 12 minutes of the half. Juniors Ali DeLuca had two of that stretch while Emma Spiro scored three of her four goals of the day, including a last-second eight-meter, which gave the Quakers a 9-4 advantage at the half.
Harvard tried to get back into the game after the break with a three-goal spurt to come as close as a 10-7 score, but freshman Erin Brennan score the first of her hat trick, followed by Becca Edwards to extend the Red and Blue lead. Penn kept Harvard at bay to wrap up the game with goals from Brennan and Edwards in the final minute of play. Those goals completed hat tricks for both players. Edwards complemented her goals with two assists to lead the team with five points.
While there was a lot to be impressed by in the Quakers' performance--18 goals, the most for Penn this season; another opponent held under 10 goals; three players with three or more goals--but maybe what speaks louder was what WASN'T in the stats--Harvard sophomore Jess Halpern. She had been lighting up opponents and averaging three goals a game, but in between scoring a game-leading four goals Penn's Spiro was marking Halpern out of the game. She not only held Halpern scoreless, but to just one shot and hurried her into four turnovers.
Another dominating area for Spiro was the draw circle. She cleaned up five as did Edwards and Ali DeLuca picked up four to help Penn hold possession.
The Quakers host Dartmouth as they continue in their quest for another Ivy League title. The game with the Big Green is set for Saturday, April 11 at noon.
