Wagner Outlasts LIU in Shootout

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Long Island University women’s lacrosse squad was outlasted by Wagner, 22-16, on Friday afternoon at Wagner Stadium in a Northeast Conference contest. A quartet of Blackbirds scored hat tricks, led by freshman Ashley Prizio who led the way with four goals.

LIU (3-10, 2-5 NEC) opened the scoring with a goal from freshman Claire Ranney, but Wagner quickly responded with three consecutive goals. The Blackbirds rallied to tie the score on back-to-back markers by sophomore Annie Kalata and senior Allison Funk at the 23:27 mark.

Wagner (4-8, 3-2 NEC) built a 7-4 lead with a goal from Prizio interrupting a pair of back-to-back goal spurts by the Seahawks. A run of three straight goals by LIU eventually tied the game as juniors Jenna Schauder and Jillian Maricondo and Ranney each converted chances to knot the score at 7-7. The teams alternated the next four goals as Kalata and Funk finished opportunities for LIU to make it 9-9. The Seahawks scored a pair before Prizio finished a free position shot, but a goal with 48 seconds by WC’s Cara Gonzalez made it 12-10 at halftime.

A goal by Prizio with 28:13 to play cut the LIU deficit to 13-11, but that was as close as it got the rest of the way. Maricondo scored at the 24:04 mark in the middle of a 4-1 Wagner run that pushed the lead to 17-12. Following a goal by Prizio, the teams alternated scores again with Kalata, Ranney and Maricondo each scoring to finish off hat tricks on the day. Maricondo’s goal came with 3:17 to play and made it 20-16, but Wagner tacked on two scores to close the contest.

Freshman Amber Meek made 15 saves for the Blackbirds, while junior Christie Wienckowskihad two assists and a team-high eight draw controls.

Kelly Blundin led the way for Wagner with six goals and an assist, while Janine Bright added three goals and five assists.
