Quinnipiac Women Tie Program Record for Wins
from press release
HAMDEN, Conn. - Tiffany Manzi's (Agawam, Mass.) four points helped lead the Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team to an 11-6 victory against Brown at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field. The Bobcats improve to 10-2 overall, tying the program single-season wins record. The loss evens the Bears' season mark at 6-6. The five-goal win marked the sixth consecutive Quinnipiac victory, one shy of the program record of seven, set last season.
"I'm really proud of my team today," said Head Coach Danie Caro. "We struggled early on and started off a little slow, but they pulled it together and were able to get to a really big win over a very talented Brown team. This sets us up well headed into our final weekend of conference play. If we can keep this going, we will have a good chance of going far in the postseason."
Manzi led the Bobcats with four points on three goals and one assist, while the Northeast Conference Player of the Week senior midfielder Ashley Valentine (Friendship, Md.) finished the game with three goals. Katie Latonick (Severna Park, Md.) had a game-high three assists and freshman Marissa Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) added two in the win. Junior Lyndsey Banach (Syracuse, N.Y.) tied her season high of two goals and senior goalkeeper Hannah Nelson (Glastonbury, Conn.) turned aside 12 Brown shots in the game, while collecting a team-high five ground balls.
Valentine started the scoring with a free-position goal four minutes into the game. Brown rebounded with goals from Katelyn Caro and Kelly Robinson to take the 2-1 advantage just under nine minutes into the game. Valentine evened the score, 2-2, as Latonick found the midfielder at the top of the crease for her second goal. Lauren Vitkus' tally with 6:33 remaining in the first half gave the Bears their final lead of the game, 3-2.
The Bobcats ended the half on a three-goal run to take the lead, 5-3. Manzi netted her first goal on a free-position shot with 4:53 on the clock. Less than a minute later, sophomore Christine Sinnigen (Sudbury, Mass.) found Nicole Fiore (Monroe, Conn.) open for the goal inside the eight-meter arc. Latonick passed from behind the net to Banach stationed at the far post for the open look and her 10th goal of the season to close out the first half.
Sinnigen and Fiore opened the scoring in the second half with two goals just over a minute apart. Brown responded with two goals of their own, pulling to within two, 7-5. That would be as close as the Bears would get as Quinnipiac scored four of the next five goals to end the game. Manzi picked up two tallies in the run, while Banach and Valentine each added a goal. Caroleo recorded both her assists on Valentine and Manzi's third goals as the Bobcats won, 11-6.
Valentine also added four draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers in the game, while sophomore defender Kaitlyn Kelly (North Massapequa, N.Y.) came off the bench to contribute two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Meghan Latonick (Severna Park, Md.) recorded two ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover in helping the Bobcats' defense allow its second lowest goals-against total this season as Brown scored just six times.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Friday, April 17, as they host Wagner on Senior Day. The Bobcats and Seahawks are set to square off at 4 p.m., with Senior Day ceremonies beginning at 3:30 p.m.
