Marist Clinches MAAC Tournament Berth

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's lacrosse team clinched a berth in the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse tournament Friday night with a 16-4 win over Niagara at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. Nine different Red Foxes scored goals for Marist, with junior midfield Lindsay Rinefierd (Smithtown, N.Y.) leading the way with three goals. Erin Wilson (Ada, Mich.), Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.), Morgan Dillon (Freeport, N.Y.), Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.), and Shannon Haas (Farmingdale, N.Y.) each had a pair of goals.

Marist (9-4, 3-2 MAAC) got on the scoreboard early as Rinefierd scored 1:11 into the game, putting a Lauren Ciccarello (Wantagh, N.Y.) pass into the net. Wilson then scored 44 seconds later to make the score 2-0. The Red Foxes went ahead 3-0 as Rinefierd scored her second goal of the game at the 23:19 mark of the first half. Niagara scored its first goal of the game with 16:43 remaining in the opening half as Leigh Downing scored on a free position shot. Marist then scored back-to-back goals by Wilson and Dillon to go ahead 5-1 with 11:26 remaining in the first half.

Niagara (4-10, 1-4 MAAC) got within three with 9:04 remaining in the first as Nicole Karek found the back of the net to make the score 5-2. The Red Foxes responded with Haas' first goal, getting an assist from Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.), with 6:39 left in the half to get the score to 6-2. Jori Procaccini (Long Valley, N.J.) then won the ensuing the draw control, taking the ball all the way into the offensive goal and scoring her lone goal of the game 11 seconds later, making the score 7-2. Marist added two more goals by Garland and Haas to take a commanding 9-2 lead with 4:23 remaining in the first half. The Purple Eagles scored twice in the final minute to close within five goals before halftime, 9-4.





Marist dominated the second half, outshooting Niagara 15-8 and forcing nine Purple Eagle turnovers while not allowing the opponents to score. Noftsker opened the scoring in the second half for the Red Foxes, scoring seven minutes into the half off of a Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.) assist. Dillon scored her second goal of the game with 21:57 remaining to make the score 11-4. Marist went ahead by 10 with 19:04 left in the game as Rinefierd scored her third goal of the game to put the Red Foxes ahead 14-4, putting the game away.

The Red Foxes doubled up Niagara in shots, 32-16, and also held a 28-20 advantage in ground balls. Marist also held a 15-7 edge in draw controls, with Dillon leading the team with three. Freshman goalie Kelsey Thoms (Newark, N.Y.) needed to make only three saves in Marist's ninth win of the season.

Marist closes the 2009 regular season at home on Sunday, April 19 with a 1 p.m. game against Canisius at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. The Red Foxes will honor the eight seniors on the 2009 squad prior to the game.
