Delaware's Sloan Named CAA Player of Week

from press release

RICHMOND, Va.  -- University of Delaware senior captain Deb Sloan earned Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse Player of the Week honors for the week ending Apr. 19, the conference office announced today.

Sloan (Thornton, Pa./West Chester East) scored two goals in the 10-6 win over James Madison on Friday night, and then followed that performance with a career-high five goals and one assist as the Blue Hens doubled-up George Mason, 14-7.

Sloan's five goals marked her third hat-trick of the season and the 12th of her career. She is the team's active leader in that statistical category.

For the week, she scored seven goals on nine shots, caused three turnovers and won two draw controls, helping Delaware to win both of its CAA contests and stay in a three-way tie atop the CAA standings heading into Thursday's games.

This is the second time the CAA has honored Sloan with a weekly award. She was named Rookie of the Week on Mar. 19, 2006 during her freshman season. That year, she was also named to the CAA All-Rookie Team. In 2007, she earned 2nd team All-CAA honors and IWLCA All-Mid Atlantic Region honors as well as the team's sportsmanship award and the CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. She was sidelined with a wrist injury for most of the 2008 season, but has made a huge impact on the team in this, her final year at Delaware.

Although this year has not been void of injuries either (she missed four games and saw limited play in a few others due to a back injury), Sloan is tied with junior Emily Schaknowski for the team lead in points with 27. She has scored a team-high 20 goals and is fourth on the team in assists with seven.

The Blue Hens next take the field on Thursday when they host CAA rival Towson at 4 p.m. If the Blue Hens win, they will earn a No. 1 seed and the right to host the CAA Tournament. If they lose, they will fall to No. 2 and the winner of the Old Dominion and William & Mary game will host the tournament.
