BERKELEY - The California lacrosse team garnered third place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coaches' Poll, the league office announced Friday. The Golden Bears claimed 26 points and one first-place vote to rank behind defending MPSF champion Stanford (36 points, 6 first-place votes) at No. 1 and Oregon (27 points, 0 first-place votes) at No. 2 in the seven-team poll.
Denver at No. 4 (25 points), UC Davis at No. 5 (16), Saint Mary's at No. 6 (11) and Fresno State at No. 7 (6) rounded out the rankings.
In 2009, Cal produced an 8-11 record and tied for second in the regular-season MPSF standings with a 4-2 record. Cal reached the conference final, falling to the rival Cardinal.
Two of the three Cal players - senior defender DennaFaye Herald and senior midfielder Alex Tickner - who earned spots on the All-MPSF team last year are back in 2010. Tickner, who was Cal's second-leading scorer with 40 points in 2009, led the Bears in goals with 35 last year. She also grabbed 23 ground balls and 25 draw controls as a junior. Herald, a steady defender, started a career-high 18 games and claimed a spot on the MPSF All-Tournament team as a junior.
Cal head coach Theresa Sherry made one change to her coaching staff from last year, bringing on former Virginia All-American and U.S. national team player Nikki Lieb as an assistant. Lieb joins Sherry and fellow assistant coach Julia Southard, who is in her third year, on Cal's staff. Sherry,
who served as a Cal assistant coach in 2007, is in her third year as the Bears' head coach.
The Golden Bears will open their 2009 season against UC Davis at 1 p.m. on Feb. 20 in Davis, Calif.
