Cincy Beats Davidson for First Victory

DAVIDSON N.C. - The University of Cincinnati
lacrosse team picked up its first win of the 2011 season, knocking
off Davidson College 13-10, Friday at Richardson Stadium.
Cincinnati (1-1) got a strong effort from midfielder Rachel Mercier who led all players with eight draw controls. Her eight draw controls were more than Davidson's (0-1) team total of seven.
UC got a pair of goals each from Maddie Fink, Katie Kiriazoglou, Katie Liberatore, Ali Mattingly, Kylie Ramsland, and Laura Simanski. Natalie Starvaggi scored a single tally.
The Bearcats led Davidson (0-1) 7-5 at the half, using six second-half goals to propel UC to the win. Jen Walsh was in goal for Cincinnati, making eight saves while earning her first win of the year.
The Wildcats scored three goals in the first nine minutes of the second half, knotting things up at 8-8 with 21:35 left in the game.
From there, UC scored five-straight goals to lead 13-8 with 5:15 remaining. Liberatore scored first, followed by Simanski, Fink, Mattingly, and Ramsland. Davidson added a pair of goals in the final minute to make the final score 13-10.
Davidson's Alanna Parker led all players with three goals.
The Wildcats got on the board first before Starvaggi and Kiriazoglou scored within a minute of each other to take a 2-1 lead with 22:06 remaining in the opening half. Davidson tied it up with a goal at the 17:33 mark before UC got a goal from Liberatore and a second score from Kiriazoglou, moving UC back into the lead at 4-2 with 11:27 left.
Davidson added a goal with 6:52 left and then Simanski and Mattingly each found the back of the net, putting UC up 6-3 with 4:26 to go before the half. Davidson added goals at 3:59 and with 39 seconds left before Fink closed out the scoring with her free-position goal with 20 seconds left in the half.
UC continues its four-match road swing to open the season Sunday at High Point University. The match is scheduled to begin at noon on Sunday. UC plays its first home match against Oregon on Sunday, March 6 at 11 a.m. inside Nippert Stadium.
