from press release
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Massachusetts' Jackie Lyons was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week, while George Washington's Hilary Quinn claimed Defensive Player of the Week honors. Duquesne's Haley Marafioti was honored as the A-10 Rookie of the Week.
Lyons scored the game-winning goal in overtime at Holy Cross after winning the draw control to start the extra period. The senior attacker helped force overtime as she set up the game-tying goal against the Crusaders by picking up a groundball with just over a minute left in regulation and the Minutewomen trailing by one goal. Lyons finished the game against Holy Cross with three points on two goals and one assist, while recording four draw controls and one groundball. Against Vermont, the Rocky Point, N.Y., native posted three goals on just five shots while adding three assists as Massachusetts completed its first week of competition with a perfect 2-0 record.
Quinn won a league-high 11 groundballs and added five draws and two caused turnovers in leading the Colonials to a 1-1 week. The junior midfielder grabbed five groundballs, three draws and caused a pair of turnovers in a win over Howard. Quinn, a native of Manhasset, N.Y., followed that performance by securing a game-high six groundballs against Drexel.
Marafioti led the Dukes in goals (4) and points (5) in her first collegiate contest as Duquesne rolled to an 18-9 victory over St. Francis (Pa.) to open the 2011 campaign. The third goal by the freshman attacker proved to be the game-winner as she found the back of the net with just over four minutes remaining in the first half. Marafioti, a native of Canandaigua, N.Y., also picked up an assist while four of her five shots went on goal.
