Late FP Goal Lifts Rutgers over Temple
from press release
PHILADELPHIA -- Rutgers' Stephanie Anderson scored her second goal of the game with 39 seconds remaining to lift her team to an 11-10 win over Temple lacrosse, a heartbreaking loss for the Owls (0-1) who had come back from two down to tie the score at 10-10. It was the season opener for both teams at Temple's Geasey Field.
Sophomore Charlotte Swavola scored four goals for Temple while junior Kelsey Zenuk scored two goals and tallied two assists. Junior goalkeeper Tess Bishop made seven saves for Temple in her first career start.
It was extremely tight game the whole way with eight ties and neither team ever leading by more than two goals.
Marlena Welsh scored the game's first goal for Rutgers, and the Scarlet Knights did not trail until Temple's Zenuk scored back-to-back goals to put the Owls up 4-3 and Swavola followed with her first goal to make the tally 5-3.
Rutgers rallied with three straight to take a 6-5 lead, and the game was tied at 6-6, 7-7 and 8-8 with the two teams trading goals.
Less than six minutes remained when Rutgers took a 10-8 lead, but Schweitzer came up with a quick answer on an assist from Zenuk to narrow the margin to one at 5:36. Swavola tied the game on an assist from Stephany Parcell with a minute and a half remaining.
In a physical game that saw a number of fouls and free position shots in front of the goal, it was a free position shot by Anderson in the final minute that lifted her team to a win.
