Cal Upended by Longwood on the Road

FARMVILLE, Va. -- California lost to Longwood, 8-6, on Friday afternoon at the Athletics Complex. The Golden Bears evened their record at 2-2 after the nonconference match, while Longwood opened the season at 1-0. Sophomore midfielder Melissa Humphrey led Cal with two goals and sophomore midfielder Megan Takacs added one goal and one assist.

The Bears cut a three-goal deficit to one in the closing minutes, with Humphrey converting a free-position shot at the 57:30 to make the score 7-6. But the Lancers tallied with one second left on the clock to make the final result 8-6.

Vail Horn notched the first goal of the game with her eighth strike of the season at 6:25. Cal eventually took a 4-3 halftime lead, with junior attacker Tara Arolla (at 9:12), freshman midfielder Amelia Burke (21:27) and Humphrey (28:11) also scoring. The Bears outshot Longwood, 16-8, in the first half.

The Lancers blitzed the Bears with the first four goals of the second half to eventually take a 7-4 lead at 55:46. Takacs scored unassisted at 56:26 and then Humphrey collected her second goal of the game to pull the Bears within one.

The rally ended when Cara O'Brien scored the last goal of the game for the Lancers at 59:59.
Cal continues its road trip when it plays Davidson on Sunday, Feb. 27, at 9 a.m. PT in Davidson, N.C.
