Temple Uses 7-2 Run to Take Down Mount

EMMITSBURG, Md. -- Temple defeated Mount St.
Mary's 9-5 in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Sunday.
Lindsay Diaz (Timonium, Md./Delaney) and Nicole Price (White Hall, Md./North Harford) paced the Mount (0-3) with two goals apiece while Brigid McTavish (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) made five stops in the loss.
Stephany Parcell and Kellee Pace fueled the Owls (1-1) with two goals and an assist each. Charlotte Swavola added a goal and an assist while Tess Bishop made seven saves in the winning effort.
Temple scored seven of the final nine goals to earn the victory in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
With the game tied at 2, Pace gave the Owls the lead for good on a free-position goal at 17:32 before the sophomore set up Parcell at 26:07 to hand Temple a 4-2 lead.
Price scored her second goal of the afternoon with 50 seconds left in the first half to trim the score to 4-3 at halftime.
Pace then started the second half scoring and a string of two-consecutive Owl tallies with her second 8-meter goal of the day at 34:41. Swavola then increased the advantage to 6-3 off a Parcell helper at 43:02.
Diaz answered for the Mountaineers with her second score of the match 12 seconds later to cut the deficit to 6-4, but Temple scored the next three markers to grab a 9-4 margin. Swavola connected with Parcell at 44:58 before Kelly Syphard (50:43) and Jaymie Tabor (57:26) each found the twine unassisted to help seal the victory.
Kaitlyn Larrimore (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) scored her first tally of the season off a Lucy Pompa (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) assist at 58:05, but Mount St. Mary's could get no closer.
Mount St. Mary's opened up its first home game of 2011 with a goal to give the squad its first lead of the season. Price scored unassisted at 4:13 to put the Mount up 1-0.
Missy Scweitzer and Karly Cohen answered for the Owls unassisted at 7:07 and 8:22 to give Temple a 2-1 edge.
Diaz tied the game with her first collegiate tally at 14:55, but the Owls scored the next two goals and went on for the victory.
Gabe Little (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) paced the defense with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Aly Jost (Abington, Md./Bel Air) added six draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers while Esther Rufolo (Woodstock, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy) registered four ground balls and two caused turnovers for Mount St. Mary's.
The Mount returns to action on Saturday at High Point. Game time is 4 p.m.
