Seven Rutgers Women Score in Rout of St. Joe's

PHILADELPHIA – Rutgers junior midfielder
Ali Steinberg (Suffern, N.Y.) scored a career-high four goals as
the Scarlet Knights (4-1) defeated Saint Joseph’s (2-3) in
convincing fashion 12-4 on Wednesday at Finnesey Field.
Rutgers took a 3-1 lead in the first half and never looked back, adding nine goals in the second to clinch the eight-goal win.
Senior midfielder Marlena Welsh (Jarrettsville, Md.) and senior attacker Katherine Marino (Hillsborough, N.J.) put Rutgers ahead 2-0 with back-to-back goals to start the game. Saint Joseph’s and Rutgers traded goals to end the half 3-1 as Steinberg found her first of four goals.
The Scarlet Knights started the second half on a 4-0 run, increasing their lead to 7-1. Steinberg opened the second half the same way she ended the first with a goal at the 29:22 mark. Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) tallied a score, while Steinberg and freshman midfielder Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.) capped the run with one goal each.
Saint Joseph’s cut the deficit to four goals with back-to-back scores from Jen Peters but the Hawks would get no closer as the Scarlet Knights ended the game outscoring SJU 4-1. Senior attacker Kristen Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) scored a goal, while Steinberg and Welsh also scored in the closing minutes. Freshman Sarah Mahon (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) tallied her first collegiate goal in the win.
Earlier in the week, Kristen Anderson and sophomore goalkeeper Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) were named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after leading Rutgers to a 1-1 week with a narrow loss against Princeton and a victory over Delaware.
Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, March 12, when it hosts Hofstra at 1 p.m. at the RU Turf Field.
