Mas Scores Six as Vermont Stays Hot

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Freshman Sydney Mas
and junior Samantha Stern combined for 10 goals to lead the Vermont
Catamounts to a 15-8 victory over Marist on Saturday afternoon in
non-conference women's lacrosse action.
The Catamounts even their record to 4-4 on the year and have won four of their last five games. Marist falls to 3-4 overall.
Mas, who was a perfect 4-for-4 on 8-meter shots, scored a career-high six goals and added an assist to lead the Catamounts. Stern chipped in four goals and teammate Emma Kelly added a hat trick for the second straight game.
"We came out strong today and set the tone for the day with our first goal of the game," said Vermont head coach Jen Johnson. "We were able to win the draws, which set up our offense and we executed well to capitalize on our opportunities. Laura Barber came up with some key stops in the cage for the second straight game for us."
Mas gave UVM a 1-0 lead a minute into the game and Marist quickly answered to knot the game up 1-1. The Catamounts answered with a six-goal rally, including three from Stern, over the next 16 minutes to take a 7-1 advantage with 11:40 remaining in the first half.
The Red Foxes closed the stanza with three straight goals over the final five minutes to cut UVM's lead to three, 7-4, as the teams headed to halftime.
The Catamounts rolled off five consecutive goals, including a pair from Kelly, in the first 10 minutes of the second half to extend its lead to eight, 11-4, with 20 minutes remaining in the game.
Marist climbed back within five, 12-7, with a three-goal rally, which included a pair form Kelly Condon, but that was as close as the Red Foxes would get.
Mas scored twice and Bri Connolly added another tally for the Catamounts as they closed out the game scoring three of the final four goals in the contest.
Laura Barber collected eight saves in the Vermont net, while Ashley Casiano and Alyssa Littin combined for 11 stops for Marist.
Jori Procaccino led Marist with three goals, while Kelly added a pair of tallies.
The Catamounts outshot Marist 36-23 and won the battle of the draws with a 14-11 edge in the game.
Vermont opens a three-game homestand on Friday (March 25) when it faces Oregon at 3 p.m. at Moulton Winder Field.
