from press release
BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Senior Gina Hoffmire and
sophomore Hannah Mirza each scored six goals to boost UC Davis to a
22-11 win over Long Island in non-conference women's collegiate
lacrosse action at LIU Field Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies improve to 9-2 for the season. The Blackbirds remain winless at 0-8.
The 22 goals marks a season high for UC Davis, which led all NCAA Division I teams in scoring offense entering the week. Furthermore, the total is the highest against a D-I opponent in school history. The 2004 team piled up 23 goals against Gannon and 24 against Colorado College.
Mirza added five draw controls and two steals to her offensive number. Hoffmire claimed two assists for eight total points while securing four ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers in the field.
Anna Geissbuhler tallied three goals and three assists, Laura Martin had a 2-1-3 scoring chart and freshman Meghan Jordan came off the bench to provide two goals and three assists. Sophomore Elizabeth Datino assisted on a game-high four goals despite not scoring one of her own.
UC Davis never trailed in the contest, with Geissbuhler assisting Mirza within 32 seconds of the opening draw for the game's first goal. Mirza completed her hat trick by the 18:04 mark as part of a 5-1 start. Hoffmire's assist to junior Kristi Irgens extended the lead to 8-2. A Mirza goal at the halftime whistle set the Aggies to an 11-5 margin at the break.
Mirza and Hoffmire each tallied two goals in a 10-minute, 4-1 run start to the second half, pushing UC Davis' lead to 15-6. Geissbuhler netted three goals within a span of five minutes later in the frame to bring the tally to 21-8.
Senior Jenna Schauder and freshman Shakoya Smith each led LIU with three goals.
The Aggies outshot their hosts by a 38-21 margin and forced 24 Blackbird turnovers. They also won 21 of the game's 34 draws.
UC Davis returns to action in an exhibition against its alumnae on Saturday. Its next official game takes place at Saint Mary's on April 6.
