Fairfield Notches 20th Straight MAAC Win

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team won its 20th consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League regular season game by defeating visiting Marist College 12-9 on Lessing Field Sunday afternoon. The victory improves the Stags to 8-4 on the season and 2-0 in conference action, while the Red Foxes fall to 3-7 on the year and 0-1 in MAAC play.

Chloe Mangan (Sayville, Conn.) tallied the first three goals of the game; the last two within 14 seconds, to give Fairfield a 3-0 lead at the 13:23 mark of the first-half. Addie Reilly (Locust Valley, N.Y.) tallied her first of three goals 56 seconds later for the 4-0 advantage. Marist would rally by scoring four of the final five goals of the half, including a pair in the final minute to cut the Stags advantage to 5-4 at the intermission.

The Red Foxes continued their run as they opened the second-half with back-to-back tallies at 29:10 and 28:51 to take a 6-5 lead. Katie Mackay (Salem, Conn.) fed Reilly 2:30 into the second-half to tie the score, 6-6-, and Melanie Raso (Farmingdale, N.Y.) put the Stags back on top with an unassisted goal at the 25:42 mark. Ariel Kramer scored for Marist at 24:15 to knot the score 7-7, a tie that Mangan broke with her game-high fifth goal, a free position tally, at 22:33. Jori Procaccini tied the game 8-8 with a free position goal at 21:30 and the game remained even for the next 10:00.

Reilly tallied her final goal of the game, an unassisted score with 11:04 to play to put the Stags ahead for good, 9-8. Raso touched net 61 seconds later with what would prove to be the game-winning goal and made the score 10-8. Mackey finished the Stags 3-0 spurt at the 4:25 mark as she put home a pass from Mackay for an 11-8 lead. Kramer scored a free position goal with 38 seconds left to get Marist within two goals, but Caitlin Townsend (Silver Spring, Md.) secured the win with a goal 24 seconds later.

Katie Keenan (Wantagh, N.Y.) made six saves, five in the first-half, to earn the win in net for the Stags.   She also picked up two of the Stags 19 ground balls, a category Fairfield finished the game with 19-15 advantage. Ashley Casiano stopped eight shots, five in the second-half, in the loss for the Red Foxes.
Fairfield outshot Marist 26-22 for the game, including a 12-8 edge in the second-half. The Stags cleared the ball successfully 12-13 times, while the Red Foxes went 11-15. Marist finished the game with a 13-8 edge in draw controls, and the two teams combined to commit 66 fouls.

Mangan led all scorers with her five goals, and tied with the Red Foxes Kramer (4G, 1A) for game-high point honors with five apiece. Reilly had three points, all goals, while Amanda Best (West Islip, N.Y.) finished with two assists and team-high four ground balls. Raso had two points, both goals, while Mackay had a goal and an assist for her two points.

The Stags return to action on Friday April 8 when they host MAAC foe Niagara at 3 p.m. on Lessing Field.
