Nova Rallies to Beat Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, Ohio
- The Villanova Wildcats found themselves staring up at a 9-3 deficit at halftime but scored eight of the game's final nine goals to post an 11-10 victory over Cincinnati on an overcast afternoon here today. Villanova (5-6 overall, 1-3 BIG EAST) picks up its first conference victory of 2011 while Cincinnati falls to 2-10 overall, 0-4 in the BIG EAST.

Justine Donodeo scored the game's biggest goals, tying the contest at 10 with an unassisted score with 4:47 to play in regulation time and then netting the game-winner with 1:29 to play. The junior finished with three goals and an assist on the afternoon to lead a balanced attack that saw 11 different Wildcats credited with a goal or an assist. Donodeo opened the scoring for Villanova at 28:59 when she converted a feed from senior Kim Wisniewski to lift the Wildcats to an early lead.

But the Bearcats reeled off five consecutive goals in a span of just over 10 minutes, including a pair from MacKenzie Parsons to build a 5-1 advantage with 18:34 left in the first half. Villanova freshman Amy Begay got the first of her two goals at 18:02 to draw the Wildcats to within 5-2. But Cincinnati picked up the game's next four goals to create a 9-2 advantage with 3:30 to go before intermission.

Freshman Ali Judge helped begin the rally when she scored on a free position shot for Villanova to bring the Wildcats within 9-3 at halftime. The second half was all about the Wildcats. Sophomore Anne Fallon made it 9-4 40 seconds into the period on a free position shot and classmate Shannon Lane converted another free position shot at 23:22 to make it 9-5. Begay and Miller teamed up for a goal at 21:44 that narrowed the deficit to three.

The Bearcats' Marissa Pierson scored what would prove to be Cincinnati's final goal of the day at 18:49 to make it 10-6. The final Villanova push began with freshmen Cait Yackus finishing off a play started by Caroline Guidera with a goal at 12:01 to pull the Wildcats back within three of the lead.

Senior Rachel Lasda and sophomore Maria Bowman scored on free position attempts within 32 seconds of one another to make it a 10-9 lead for Cincinnati with 7:14 left. Donodeo then delivered in style, first drawing VU even at 10 with 4:47 left before ultimately scoring the game-winner with 89 seconds to go before overtime. Villanova outshot Cincinnati 25-6 in the second half and 33-19 for the game.

It owned a 16-8 edge in draws controlled with sophomore Shawna Giust and senior Amy Jackson earning five apiece. Princess Livingston led VU with six ground balls on the afternoon while Wisniewski, Giust and Jackson were each credited with four. Sophomore Amanda Hirschfeld, who relieved Julia Todd in the first half in goal for the Wildcats, made two saves in earning the win. Jen Walsh made 15 saves in goal for Cincinnati.

The Wildcats complete their road trip on Sunday when they face Louisville at noon.
