American Sets Mark in Romp Over Liberty

from press release

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The American University lacrosse team defeated Liberty Tuesday afternoon on Senior Day by a score of 23-3, setting new program records for most goals scored and largest margin of victory.

American's (8-7, 3-3) 23 goals surpassed the previous record of 21 set on March 6, 1997 in a 21-4 win over Duquesne. The 17-goal difference against the Dukes also stood as the previous record for margin of victory. Lisa Schaaf scored two goals and added four assists for the Eagles, matching the program record for assists in a game.

American's offense was led by Kimberly Collins who tied her career-high with five goals. Emily Burton, meanwhile, set a new career-best with four scores while Bernadette Maher and Chiara Speziale chipped in three goals apiece. A total of nine Eagles scored in the victory with seven turning in multiple-goal performances.

The Eagles' defense was just as tough at the other end of the field as Liberty's three goals scored were the fewest American has allowed since defeating Bucknell 17-3 on May 1, 2004 in the Patriot League Tournament Semifinals. Brit Ferguson paced the defensive unit with two caused turnovers and two groundballs while Paige Lin and Eliza Morgan also registering two groundballs. American won 21 of the 27 face-offs on the day with Lin winning 16 of 19.

The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead less than five minutes into the game as Collins scored back-to-back goals to open the scoring. Following a Liberty goal which made the score 4-1, American closed out the first half on a 10-0 run for a 14-1 halftime advantage. Burton scored three of her four goals during the stretch with Schaaf and Maher each adding two.

Maher and Collins put the Eagles on top 16-1 coming out of the break before consecutive goals by the Flames made it a 16-3 game. Burton ended Liberty's run with her fourth score of the day and was followed by six more American goals as the Eagles finished the day on a 7-0 stretch. Morgan notched two goals during the run while Alex Lugovina registered her first career goal off a feed from Schaaf.

American will close out its regular season Saturday, April 23 against Davidson at 1:00 p.m. in Davidson, N.C.
