Fucigna on Fire as Davidson Tops Presbyterian

from press release

CLINTON, S.C. — Ann Fucigna (Darien, Conn.) continued her torrid scoring pace with season bests of six goals and eight points, and Davidson finished out its last regular season road game at Presbyterian with an impressive 17-11 win in a women’s National Lacrosse Conference contest on Wednesday afternoon at Old Bailey Stadium.

The ‘Cats moved to 4-3 in league play and 5-10 overall, while remaining unbeaten in the all-time series vs. the Blue Hose at 4-0. PC saw its record drop to 2-6 in NLC action and 4-12 overall.

Fucigna was not alone in recording a multi-goal afternoon as fellow freshman Paige Logan (Garden City, N.Y.) and junior Erin Keitel (Carlsbad, Calif.) found the back of the net three times each, and Alanna Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) pushed her consecutive goal streak to 22 straight games with a pair of scores.

Jessica Palfrey (Bronxville, N.Y.) added her sixth goal of the season and Carlee Simon (Owings Mills, Md.) dished off her second collegiate assist in the win.

The Blue Hose, who tied Davidson in the second half by scoring eight goals, saw Brianne Ward, Kirstin Stenoien and Lauren Gulledge pace the team with two goals apiece. Laura Meade had a team-best four points with a goal and three assists.

Fucigna, who entered the game with a team-best 36 goals, had a hand in four of Davidson’s first seven goals through the first 15 minutes of the game, and closed with four of her six goals in the first half. The freshman netted her second goal of the contest at the 19 minute mark to give the ‘Cats a 5-2 lead, then 30 second later, assisted on Logan’s 15th goal of the season, and finished out her quick scoring spurt with another goal as Davidson held a 7-2 lead.

Fucigna added one more goal for good measure, and her fifth point of the half, with a free position goal to give the ‘Cats a commanding 9-3 lead at halftime.

The freshman has scored in all but two games this season, registered 12 multiple goal games and has netted at least two goals in the last seven straight games. During that stretch, Fucigna has recorded 25 of her 42 total goals on the season.

Fucigna is also just seven goals away from matching the single-season record set last year by Jen Crawford and is six points away from reaching the top-five in points for a single-season.

Davidson’s lead grew to double-digits, 13-3, in the second half on Liz Edward’s (Cincinnati, Ohio) second collegiate goal at the 25:41 mark. Edwards added an assist for a season-best two points on the afternoon.

A few minutes later, Logan and Fucigna hooked up again for the ‘Cats 15th goal to make it 15-3 and they never looked back in coasting to the 17-11 victory.

Davidson had advantages in shots (31-27), groundballs (22-18), draw controls (19-11) and were 4-of-8 on free-position shots. Alanna Parker led the way statistically, recording eight draw controls, three groundballs and three caused turnovers, with the last two giving her career bests.

Stella Davis (Phoenix, Md.) and Jessica Melby (Pittsburgh, Pa.) matched Parker with three groundballs each, while Logan had a season-high four of them. Six ‘Cats in all had a multiple groundball game, with Lindsey Cooper (Baltimore, Md.) and Erin McGuire (Bishopville, Md.) chipping in two apiece.

Melby earned her fifth career win by stopping six of the Blue Hose’s shots in goal. The sophomore pushed her season total to 103.

The Wildcats finished out their regular season with a Senior Day game on Saturday, Apr. 24 against American, with gametime set for 1 p.m.
