Fairfield Women Unveil Spring Competition

from press release

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Fairfield University third-year head women's lacrosse coach Mike Waldvogel officially announced the Stags 2011 slate this morning. The Stags 16-game regular season slate will feature games six Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League contests, a first-ever contest with the University of Florida and a visit by the University of California-Davis.

"We are very excited about our 2011 schedule;" said Waldvogel, "it's a nice blend of traditional MAAC League opponents, local rivalries and great non conference games. We have really upgraded the non-conference portion of our schedule with the additions of the likes of Florida and Hofstra, and I am confidant those experiences will help us achieve our goal of winning the MAAC Championship and returning to the NCAA Tournament."

The Stags open the campaign on the road, travelling to New Jersey for a contest with Monmouth on February 19. It marks the third consecutive year that Fairfield and Monmouth have met in the opening weekend, with the Stags capturing the first two contests.

Fairfield will play four of its next five games at home; hosting Quinnipiac in the home opener on February 25. The Stags will host Holy Cross on March 1 as part of double-header of lacrosse with the Stags men's squad hosting Quinnipiac that evening. The lone road game of the stretch is at James Madison – which finished 2009 ranked 8th in the nation – on March 5. The Stags return home to host cross-town rival Sacred Heart on March 9 and perennial power New Hampshire on March 12.

A three-game road trip is next on the schedule for Fairfield, beginning March 16 at Lehigh. The Stags then cross Long Island Sound to take on Hofstra, which was ranked 16th in the final 2009 national poll, on March 19. Fairfield travels south on March 23 for its final non-conference road game, playing at Florida – which earned votes in the final media poll of 2009, following its inaugural Division I season. The Stags wrap-up the non-conference portion of the schedule at home on March 26 as it hosts UC-Davis.

Fairfield begins MAAC play on the road this season, travelling to Loudonville, N.Y. for a match-up with 2009 MAAC Championship semifinal opponent, Siena. The Stags are the three-time defending MAAC Regular Season Champions and enter the year with an 18-game regular season conference win streak – the second longest in program and conference history.

The Stags play their three home league games in an eight-day span beginning with Marist on April 3. The following weekend Fairfield hosts Niagara, April 8, and Canisius, April 10 – honoring the senior class prior to the final home game of the year. The regular season concludes on the road with an April 15 game at Manhattan and an April 21 matinee at Iona.

The 2011 MAAC Championship will be hosted by Iona in New Rochelle, N.Y. April 29-May 1. The top-four teams from the regular season will meet in search of the tournament crown.
