UConn Hires Two Assistant Coaches

STORRS, Conn. – University of Connecticut
lacrosse head coach Katie Woods announced the hiring of Julia
Southard and Melynda Zwick as assistant coaches for the upcoming
Southard, a 2005 graduate of Brown University, comes to UConn after serving as an assistant coach for the past 5 years, most recently at the University of California, Berkeley.
"Julia's coaching experience and energy will be extremely helpful for the UConn program moving forward," Woods said. "I am excited for her to work with our defense and goalkeepers and put her mark on Connecticut Lacrosse."
While at UC-Berkeley, Southard focused on individual skill development while working primarily with the defensive unit and the goalkeepers. In her final year, she assisted the head coach with the midfield development as well. She played an active role in all aspects of game preparation, including scouting opponents and film breakdown.
Off the field, Southard was the recruiting coordinator for the Golden Bears and was responsible for bringing in two of the top recruiting classes in program history. On the academic side, she was responsible for maintaining the academic progress of each team member. Throughout her time at Berkeley, she organized various community service projects and oversaw all aspects of team-community involvement.
Southard was a four-year varsity letterwinner and a three-year starter for the Bears, earning All-Ivy League Second Team honors as a goalkeeper during her senior year.
Zwick, a 2008 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, returns for her third season at UConn after serving as an assistant coach for the Huskies for the previous two years.
"Melynda brings experience and knowledge of the UConn system, which will be instrumental in advancing the program," Woods said. "She has a passion for the sport that will translate to the players to make them better on and off the field."
At UConn, Zwick served as the offensive coordinator and worked with the midfielders. She also assisted with planning practices, monitored the team's academic progress, and organized team travel.
Zwick also has experience coaching at a variety of lacrosse camps, including Amonte Sports, Five Star Girls Lacrosse, Nike Lacrosse and 180 Lacrosse School.
While at UMass, Zwick led her team to two Atlantic 10 Tournament appearances, including a runner-up finish during her senior season, and posted 100 total points on 60 goals and 40 assists over her playing career.
"Both Julia and Melynda are extremely excited to be a part of the UConn program and want to put Connecticut lacrosse on the map," Woods said. "I am very excited for the upcoming season as well as the future of the program. I think they will both have a strong impact on our success and culture moving forward."
