Siena Faces Tough Start to Season
from press release
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Siena women's
lacrosse head coach Andrea Duffy issued her program's 2011 schedule
this afternoon. The Saints' 15-game regular season ledger opens on
Feb. 22 with a showdown at crosstown rival UAlbany.
"I am looking forward to getting our 2011 season underway," commented Duffy, the reigning MAAC Coach of the Year. "I am really happy with the competition this year and the way the schedule is set up. We open with two of our toughest competitors which will be a great test for us heading into the heart of our schedule."
The Saints kickoff the season with back-to-back stiff tests against defending conference champions UAlbany and UMass. The Saints and Great Danes meet for the 14th time during the season opener which is scheduled for Feb. 22 at John Fallon Field. Siena, which will play seven home games in 2011, welcomes two-time defending Atlantic-10 champion UMass to Siena Turf Field on Feb. 26.
Additional non-conference home games include Long Island (Mar. 5), Liberty (Mar. 12) and Vermont (Mar. 16). Out of conference road tilts include Bryant (Mar. 1) and Lehigh (Mar. 9).
The Saints will also play two neutral site games next spring. On Mar. 20, Siena and Wagner meet at Allen Field in Oyster Bay, N.Y. for the start of a new tradition. In addition to raising awareness for Breast Cancer during the game, the Saints and Seahawks will be playing in the first annual meeting between the two schools on Long Island in which the winner will receive a special trophy. Siena's other neutral site game takes place six days later on Mar. 26 against Presbyterian at Anne Arundel Community College in Baltimore, Md.
Conference play opens up on Mar. 30 in Loudonville against defending MAAC Regular Season Champion Fairfield. MAAC home games include Niagara (Apr. 14) and defending MAAC Tournament Champion Marist for Senior Day (Apr. 23) with road contests at Manhattan (Apr. 8), Iona (Apr. 10) and Canisius (Apr. 17).
The 2011 MAAC Championships will be held by Iona College Apr. 29-May 1 in New Rochelle, N.Y. The top-four teams in the seven-team conference will qualify for the tournament.
Siena returns 10 of their 12 starters and 14 letterwinners from last season's squad which went 7-9 overall and 3-3 in finishing fourth in the MAAC and qualifying for the conference tournament for just the second time ever.
Leading the Saints in 2011 will be senior captains Caitlin Mikel and Erin Hepper. A First Team All-MAAC and MAAC Tournament Team selection a year ago, Mikel broke the programs' single-season scoring record with 67 points including 46 goals which was the second most in the conference. She enters her senior season just six goals shy of 100 for her career and is 15 points away from breaking Siena's all-time career scoring record.
Hepper meanwhile was also named to the All-MAAC Tournament Team last season and was a Second Team All-MAAC selection. She finished second in the conference with 2.81 groundballs per game and third in caused turnovers per game, averaging 1.88.
