Timchal, Navy Set to Defend Patriot League Title

from press release

Head coach Cindy Timchal has recently announced the 2011 Navy women's lacrosse schedule. Navy is beginning its fourth season of Division I play and is set to defend its 2010 Patriot League championship.

Navy, which plays all of its home games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, will open the season on a six-game homestand, beginning with Mount St. Mary's Feb. 11 at 4:00 pm. The Mids have an impressive 30-4 (.882) all-time record at NMCMS. All Navy home women's lacrosse games feature free admission.

Following its season opener with Mount St. Mary's, Navy will host two more games the following weekend. The Mids will first take on Ohio State, who spent most of the 2010 season ranked in the top 20, on Feb. 18 and then Davidson on Feb. 20.

"We're really excited about opening our season at home against a local team in Mount St. Mary's," said Timchal. "We are also looking forward to having Ohio State, which is a solid team, come to Annapolis to play us."

The Mids will welcome in a pair of young Division I programs the following weekend in Bryant (Feb. 25) and High Point (Feb. 27). Bryant is in its third year of playing at the Division I level and High Point will begin its inaugural season of varsity lacrosse in 2011.

The sixth and final game of Navy's season-opening homestand will be March 3 against Northwestern. Timchal was Northwestern's first women's lacrosse coach in 1982 and took the fledgling program to five NCAA Tournaments during her nine-year tenure.

Northwestern was the national runner-up in 2010, falling to Maryland in the NCAA Championship Game. This will be the first meeting between Navy and Northwestern.

Two days later on March 5, Navy will play its first road game of the season at Robert Morris. The Mids posted a 5-1 Patriot League record in 2010 to claim a share of the regular season title and will open their 2011 league slate at Bucknell on March 12.

Navy will then take advantage of spring break by playing two games in California. The Mids will play at Fresno State (March 15) and at the University of California (March 17). Both schools play in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Lafayette travels to Annapolis on March 20 for the Mids' Patriot League home opener.

Navy will then have a tough mid-season non-conference test at William & Mary on March 29. William and Mary dealt Navy its first loss of the 2010 season.

"It will be a great opportunity for us to take on William & Mary, a top-20 team that has been a contender for the CAA Championship."

The Mids resume conference play at Holy Cross on April 2 and then will host Colgate April 9. Colgate won the previous two league titles before Navy's championship season in 2010 and was the league's No. 3 seed with a 4-2 record last year.

Navy's final non-conference game will be played at Longwood April 16.

The Mids will close league play with a home game against Lehigh April 23. The Mountain Hawks were co-champions with the Mids in 2010 and handed Navy its only Patriot League defeat of the season.

"Hosting Lehigh in the last Patriot League game of the year will definitely be a highlight of our schedule," said Timchal.

The Patriot League Tournament will be held at the league's regular season champion April 28 and 30. The top four teams advance to postseason play.

"Since we have been here, every team in the Patriot League has lifted its program and it is a tough conference to play in," said Timchal.

The Midshipmen return five all-league selections and 10 starters from a team that was 17-4 in 2010 and advanced to the NCAA First Round. Additionally, Navy finished the season ranked No. 19 in the deBeer/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.
