William and Mary Announces 2012 Schedule
from press release
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- William and Mary lacrosse head coach Brooke Ireland has announced the Tribe's schedule for the upcoming 2012 season. The challenging slate features 17 regular-season contests, eight of which will be played at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
Highlighting the schedule are seven games against teams that competed in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, including the defending national champions, Northwestern, and two other squads that advanced to the national semifinals - Maryland and Duke.
"After a crazy fall, I am looking forward to getting on the field with this group of young women and amazing staff," Ireland said. "We are excited to compete against some of the top teams in the country this season, and our strength of schedule is what keeps our team focused and driven everyday. The players' intensity in practice is just as high as it is in games, which is important as we prepare to compete at the highest level."
The Tribe will begin its campaign with three games against opponents that earned NCAA bids last spring, a challenging opening stretch that starts with a matchup against Duke on Feb. 8 in Williamsburg. W&M will then hit the road for games at Maryland, the three-time defending Atlantic Coast Conference champions, on Feb. 12, and at Navy, the two-time defending Patriot League champions, on Feb. 15.
After closing out a stretch of three consecutive road contests at Virginia Tech on Feb. 25, the College will return to Williamsburg when it hosts Longwood on Feb. 29.
W&M will then begin another challenging three-game stretch against teams that competed in last season's NCAA Tournament, which starts with a trip to the defending national champions, Northwestern, on March 10. The Tribe will then host Virginia (March 14) and Florida (March 17).
The College will wrap up the non-conference portion of its slate with road games at Richmond (March 21) and Penn State (March 25).
Conference play commences with home games against Old Dominion (April 1), Towson (April 6) and Delaware (April 8). W&M will then play at James Madison, the defending league champions, on April 13 before hosting George Mason on April 15. The regular season will wrap up the following weekend at Drexel (April 20) and at Hofstra (April 22).
The Tribe will look to qualify for its fifth consecutive CAA Championship when the league's top four teams compete for the title on April 27 and 29. The conference's regular-season champion will host the event.
