Northwestern Sits Atop ALC Poll
from press release
MIAMI, Ohio - The Northwestern Wildcats, the national and ALCâtournament champions from last season, were picked first in the ALC preseason poll as announced by the league on Wednesday, February 8. The 'Cats were a unanimous first-place selection, while the 2011 regular season titleists, the Florida Gators, were second on all of the ballots in voting by the league's coaches.
The Penn State Nittany Lions, who finished third in the regular season in 2011, were tabbed in third by the league, with Ohio State, Vanderbilt, and Johns Hopkins following in succession. This order mirrors the final standings from the regular season of 2011, which set the seeds for the 2011 ALCâTournament hosted by Vanderbilt.
The rankings of the ALC coaches follow closely the preseason IWLCAâpoll which was released last week. Northwestern was picked by the pollsters for the No. 1 slot, with Florida, in only its third season of competition, coming in at No. 4. The ALC had a block in the national poll, with Penn State (No. 17), Ohio State (No. 18), and Vanderbilt (No. 19) all in the national rankings in the same order as voted by the league.
The 2012 ALCâcompetitive season begins on Friday as the top-ranked 'Cats open up on the road against No. 6 Stanford. No. 18 Ohio State is also in Palo Alto and takes on first-year program San Diego State on Saturday. The No. 4 Gators also open up on Saturday as they travel to face nationally third-ranked UNC.
The ALCâleague games begin on March 18 as Penn State travels to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt. The 2012 ALCâTournament kicks off on Thursday, May 3 in Gainesville, Florida.
